Instant Recap: Michigan 85, Long Beach St. 61

Long Beach State threw different defenses at Michigan in the early going of a 85-61 U-M win, but the Wolverines didn't have any problem solving whatever the 49ers threw at them. Sophomore Nik Stauskas, guarded in man in a triangle and two look to open the game, missed his first two shots before exploding for 16 first half points.

Freshman Derrick Walton Jr. busted the zone in opening with a triple, followed by a three-pointer from Glenn Robinson III. A 5-0 Long Beach run cut it to two, but the Wolverines shot extremely well from three-point range, six-for-eight at one point, continue to pull away, starting with a Walton triple off the dribble.

Sophomore big man Mitch McGary entered at the 14-minute mark and made his presence felt immediately, finishing with his left hand on a nice post move to make it 19-14. Stauskas and LeVert triples made it 25-14.

Poor Michigan shot selection allowed Long Bach State to creep back within 11 after trailing by as many as 18. LeVert forced a drive, Horford bricked a triple and Walton rushed a triple during the stretch. Robinson also left a bad 17-footer short before LeVert worked inside to end the drought. 34-23.

Stauskas took over down the stretch in the first half. He worked backdoor for a dunk and hit a triple after big man Max Bielfeldt missed from long range.

Stauskas scored 16 points and 11 of Michigan's last 15 of the first half, one that ended 42-29 U-M. Glenn Robinson III and LeVert scored seven each, while Walton notched six points and four rebounds.

Second Half

Robinson started the second half with a pump fake, step in jumper. LeVert triple from the corner to open it back up to 47-31, and the Wolverines continued to expand the lead. Zak Irvin tripled at the 12:30 mark to make it 58-40, matching the biggest lead of the first half.

Long Beach State rallied to within 13 before Stauskas hit a jump shot to make it 61-46 at the 10:30 mark.

Michigan then got sloppy with the ball, allowing the 49ers to get back into the game. Long beach mounted a 12-3 run when the Wolverines went cold, and with U-M turning it over three times in that stretch, cut the lead to 61-52. Stauskas, though, countered with a triple off the dribble with the shot clock winding down to put U-M back up 12.

LeVert worked inside off the dribble for four points to help keep Michigan up by double digits. It was 70-57 with 4:27 remaining. A pick and roll with Jordan Morgan and Walton resulted in a three-point play, making it a 16-point game heading into the final TV timeout.

A Walton triple the next time down, followed by two LeVert threes that made it 82-61, ended any suspense at 2:23.

Michigan made 14 of 30 triples, led by LeVert's four of seven and Stauskas' four of six. Stauskas scored 24 points, LeVert added 20, Robinson 14 and Walton Jr. nine with a team high seven rebounds.
