Irvin name Big Ten Freshman Of The Week
Freshman guard Zak Irvin came alive in the Wolverines' 87-45 win over Coppin State Friday, leading the team with a career-high 24 points in Michigan's first game back in Ann Arbor after a disappointing loss to Charlotte in the title game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
For his efforts, Irvin was named Big Ten Freshman Of The Week.
In the third edition of the conference's weekly honors this season, Irvin is the first Michigan player to be recognized.
Irvin finished the Coppin State game 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the floor, including a 6-of-10 mark from three-point range. He added five rebounds and three assists in just 26 minutes on the court.
Irvin nearly matched his total output in the first six games of the season vs. Coppin State alone. Coming into the matchup, Irvin scored 28 points on 10-of-36 shooting from the floor (27.7 percent) and 6-of-22 from three-point range (27.2 percent).
This is Irvin's first Big Ten honor and the first time a Michigan player has won Big Ten Freshman Of The Week since forward Mitch McGary did so Feb. 11, 2013.
