Stat Tracker: U-M vs. top-ranked opponents

Michigan's nationally televised showdown with Arizona Saturday gained a little intrigue when this week's polls were released this week.

The Wildcats, led by freshman sensation small forward Aaron Gordon, jumped to the No. 1 spot in the polls after Michigan State lost to North Carolina at home in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge last week.

Since the major college basketball polls began in the 1948-49 season, this will be the ninth time the Wolverines have played host to the nation's top-ranked team in a regular season matchup.

The last time a No. 1 squad came to Ann Arbor was the final regular-season game of former coach Tommy Amaker's tenure. The Wolverines let an upset bid slip away late, falling to No. 1 Ohio State, 65-61. After second-round exits in both the Big Ten Tournament and the NIT Tournament, Amaker was let go, and John Beilein was hired.

Michigan has a 1-7 all-time record in home games against No. 1 teams during the regular season.

The lone victory game against No. 1 Duke Dec. 13, 1997, when an unranked Michigan team pulled off an 81-73 upset win.

The Wolverines have an all-time record of 1-17 against No. 1 teams during the regular season.

But, historically, Michigan has put up a good fight in those games.

In the Beilein era, the Wolverines have played three top-ranked teams (Ohio State in 2010-11, Kansas in 2009-10 and Connecticut in 2008-09). They lost those games by a combined 28 points. Only the Kansas game, a 75-64 loss, was by double digits.

Of Michigan's 17 all-time losses to No. 1 teams in the regular season, nine of them were by single digits, including a 93-92 loss at top-ranked Indiana Feb. 14, 1993 and a pair of overtime losses: 88-85 vs. Duke Dec. 14, 1991 and 72-67 at Indiana in 1976, during the Hoosiers' undefeated national championship season.
