Michigan sweeps top 10 opponents, weekly awards
Michigan's wins over top 10, Big Ten foes Iowa and Michigan State have also netted Player of the Week awards for two Wolverines. Sophomore shooting guard Nik Stauskas and freshman point guard Derrick Walton were named Big Ten player and freshman of the week, respectively, after leading U-M to crucial wins.
Michigan is now 7-0 in conference play, the only undefeated team remaining, and will face Purdue Thursday night in Ann Arbor before traveling to Indiana Sunday.
Stauskas, also named CBSSports.com's and CollegeSportsMadness.com's Player of the Week, won the award for the second straight week. He averaged 22.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game, shot 57.7 percent from the field (15-for-26) and 60.0 percent from long range (9-for-15). He also made six of seven free throws.
Stauskas tied a career-high with 26 points in Michigan's win over No. 10 Iowa (Jan. 22). He added five rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal, while going 8-for-14 from the field (57.1 percent) and 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) from long range. He scored 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting at MSU, including a 5-for-6 performance from behind the arc. He added four assists, two rebounds and a steal.
Walton Jr. played only three minutes against Iowa due to the flu, but he was instrumental in Michigan's win in East Lansing with a career best 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. He finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field (4-for-8) and a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc, including a key triple to help U-M tie the game at 58-58 down the stretch. His three-point play in transition made it 66-60 and gave the Wolverines breathing room.
Walton made nine of 10 free throws and was clutch down the stretch to secure the win over the Spartans, Michigan's fifth in seven tries over MSU.
