Who & why 2015 Kentuckypreps.com Football Prospect Rankings

Last week Kentuckypreps.com released its list of ranked prospects for the 2015 class. It was the first update of the new recruiting cycle and a lot has changed.

Head of the class

Junior running back Damien Harris heads the 2015 class in Kentucky as well as backs nationwide. Ranked the No. 5 overall prospect in the Rivals100 is good for the No. 1 in his position.

Most recently, Harris received an offer from Auburn which was a tiny squeak in a recruitment that has been pretty hush-hush since the 5-foot-10, 205-pound prospect de-committed from Michigan.

Neck & neck

There's not much of a discrepancy in talent between the quarterbacks ranked at No. 4 and No. 5 on the list - Elijah Sindelar and Reese Ryan.

Sindelar got the nod over Ryan because of his size, stability in the pocket and his ability to make plays while rolling out of it whether it's making a throw on the run or just running.

Ryan reminds me a lot a Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Can make throws from all over and improvise when he needs to utilizing the entire backfield at times.

Biggest movers

Louisville-native Michael Nero ascended into the No. 10 spot in the update. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Manual Crimson has adequate speed for his size but will need to continue to get faster if he would like to someday claim a BCS level offer.

The reason Nero separates himself in a group where all the running backs are of the same stature and speed is his knack for making it out of tight holes on the line of scrimmage and breaking the long play. Working on his speed would only increase that talent.

Fellow Louisvillian Davis Mattingly goes to the rival school of Nero but comes in at No. 11, right behind him.

Mattingly has a stable of skill players at his disposal at Male, but throughout the course of his junior campaign he commanded the pocket and delivered balls in stride to all of his talented receivers.

Arien Beasley of North Oldham is a newcomer to the 2015 rankings. His 4.4-forty speed his him right in the thick of it.

Beasley, who is now ranked No. 29, packs a punch with his feet weighing 190-pounds with a 5-foot-10 frame.

Room to rise

Beasley is a candidate for this group of guys who could become big movers when the camp circuit gets going this spring and summer as well.

Another athlete that fits that bill, Louisville (Ky.) Doss tight end Tyler Jefferson. Building muscle on to that 6-foot-6 frame could be the determining factor in how really good he can be.

Jefferson tells Kentuckypreps.com he has plans to be at 230-pounds before the start of his senior football season. If he can keep his speed and athleticism with the bigger weight his stock should soar.

Playing out of position this season hurt him on this list after a sensational sophomore year for Butler athlete Will Johnson. Johnson played quarterback for the Bears last year and did it well helping them to the semi-finals of the state championship.

While Johnson says he will prefect the craft of signal calling this offseason, I believe he is better served on the defensive side of the ball.

Listed as an athlete Johnson could play a plethora of positions on both sides of the ball. On offense: quarterback, running back, full back and tight end. On Defense: outside linebacker, inside linebacker(he would benefit playing in a 3-4) and strong safety. He's the most well-rounded athlete in the rankings.
