By The Numbers: U-M head-to-head recruiting with MSU

Over the past five years, Michigan and Michigan State have not just found themselves doing battle on the field. The in-state rivals have also increased the competition for recruits, going head-to-head 48 times in the 2011-15 classes.

  • In the 2003-07 recruiting classes, under head coach Lloyd Carr, Michigan and Michigan State went head to head for recruits 24 times, and Michigan was 20-4 in those battles (83.3 percent).

On the field of play, U-M was in the midst of a six-game winning streak (2002-07) over the Green and White.

  • From 2008-10, the three official classes of coach Rich Rodriguez - he joined in Dec. 2007, but the 2008 class is technically his just as the 2011 class is technically Brady Hoke's - the rivals went head-to-head 24 times, and U-M was 13-11 in those recruiting battles (54.2 percent).

State had the upper hand on the field in each of those three seasons.

  • In Hoke's five classes so far, 2011-15, Michigan and Michigan State have done battle 48 times, and the Wolverines are 37-11 (77.1 percent) in those head-to-head matchups.

  • On the field, Michigan lost to State four years in a row from 2008-11 (and again in 2013), and felt a hit in three of the following four classes, going 1-4 against MSU in the 2009 class, just 6-5 in 2010 and 4-4 in 2011.

That represents the Wolverines' worst three-year stretch (11-13 for a success rate of 45.8 percent) against the Spartans in the 13 classes available to be researched on Rivals.com.

In the 2014 class, even after another loss in 2013, U-M went 6-2 in recruiting battles against its in-sate brethren.

  • Michigan's inability to beat Michigan State on the field has not had a dramatic impact on its ability to best the Spartans on the recruiting trail. However, that is small solace for U-M fans for a 1-5 overall record against the Green and White since 2008.
