USC Sophomore Pass-Catch Duo Earn Heisman Votes

Sophomore duo Matt Leinart and Mike Williams, the prolific pass and catch duo from USC, finished in 6th and 8th place, respectively, in the 2003 Heisman Trophy voting. Oklahoma's Jason White won the award after tossing an incredible 40 touchdowns and guiding his team to a 12-1 record.

Despite being mere sophomores, Williams and Leinart finished strong in the Heisman balloting despite no active campaign from USC to endorse them. Their Heisman credentials are expected to improve dramatically next year as both become juniors, as the award has historically gone to very few underclassmen.

Williams received 12 first place votes, 12 second place votes, and 18 third place votes, earning a total of 78 points.

Leinart received 5 first place votes, 27 second place votes, and 58 third place votes, earning a total of 127 points, 9 points ahead of Norm Chow pupil and NC State's QB Philip Rivers and just 7 points behind Kansas State junior tailback Darren Sproles.

USCFootball.com congratulates Matt and Mike on their outstanding seasons and their strong Heisman finishes.
