LSI Saturday Night Game Notes
Lake Oswego 53, Lincoln 52
Freshman Kevin Love has scored a lot of points over the last three days but his last two on Saturday night were his biggest. The 6-foot-8 forward watched his baby hook shot fall with 1.7 seconds left on the clock to give the Lakers the victory.
The freshman injured his leg when a Lincoln player fell on him in a scrum for a rebound. Love was pulled from the game after a three minute delay but quickly returned into the rotation. His toughness was the answer to the game.
Love, who sat the entire half after getting two fouls in the game's opening minute, finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Love picked up two early fouls for the second game in a row and quickly found his way back to the bench after only play one minute in the game. Lincoln quickly acknowledged the loss and attacked the basket on nearly every possession.
Although Love scored the winning bucket, Lake Oswego's Hannes Gehring was clutch. The 6-foot-2 senior filled the void when Love went out to fouls, scoring 14 of Lake Oswego's 18 first points. Gehring finished with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Omar Leary continued to show his amazing court vision for Lincoln and had some beautiful interior assists to high-flyer LaTravis Turner (14 points, five rebounds). Shooter Mark Robinowitz had a team high 15 points and always seemed to find the bottom of the twine when the Cardinals needed a score.
Jesuit 72, South Salem 56
It was a balanced attack as the Crusaders knocked off the Saxons in the semifinal round. Led by Seth Tarver's 21 points and eight rebounds, Jesuit maintained a lead the entire game and didn't let the grip loosen.
The sophomore guard played a flawless game on both sides of the ball and really proved himself as one of the top sophomores on the West Coast. His older brother, Josh, a junior had 16 points on 6-8 shooting. Sergio Jones added 12 points.
South Salem was led by Steve Taylor, who scored 12 points. The shooting guard got some help from Chris Rowlell (11 points) and 6-foot-7 Alex Vite (11 points and seven rebounds).
Jesuit moves onto Sunday's championship game where they will play Lake Oswego at 8:30 p.m. PST for the LSI championship at the Chiles Center on the campus of the University of Portland.
Player of the day: Hannes Gerhing of Lake Oswego. If it weren't for him the Lakers would be playing for third place, even with Kevin Love's amazing performance.
Game of the day: It is a no-brainer. Lake Oswego's win over Lincoln will probably be the tournament's best.
Surprise of the day : Hillsboro's 6-foot-8 junior Brad Hodge has had an amazing tournament. Today was no different as he scored 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds. He's better than we expected.
