Signees do well at state track & field

It came down to a couple of football signees to break some discus records at the Georgia state high school track & field meet in Jefferson on Thursday. Brannan Southerland, set the new mark in Class AA, while Antonio Lamar set the record in Class AAAAA.

Southerland will play football for Georgia while Lamar is headed to South Carolina. Both are projected to play fullback in college.

Southerland, who was rated by Rivals.com as the number three fullback in the nation from, came in first in the Class AA discus with a toss of 176-feet, 6-incges for Greater Atlanta Christian. His throw set a meet record edging out the old mark by nearly an inch-and-a-half. Lamar destroyed the old record by nearly 20 inches with a shot of 197-feet, 4-inches.

Two other Bulldog signees finished in the top five in other events.

Antonio Sims of Hiram, came in second in the Class AAAA triple jump with 48-7 1/2. He finished third in the long jump with a leap of 23-feet 1/2-inches. Sims is expected to challenge for playing time as a true freshman at safety.

Jeremy Lomax of Lovejoy finished third in the Class AAAAA high jump rising 6-feet 4-inches. Lomax will play defensive end for the Bulldogs.

Offensive tackle prospect for 2005, Marlon Davis of Carver High in Columbus came in second in the Class AAAAA shot put with a throw of 52-feet 6 1/2-inches. Davis, who was named to the first team Bi-City and All State honorable mention as a junior, does not have any scholarship offers at this time, but says that Georgia and Alabama are his top two.

Linebacker Jae Thaxton, a Florida State signee out of Hartwell, came in second in the Class AAA discuss with a hurl of 153-feet 10-inches.
