RECRUITING: Top Baseball/Football Prospects

It is very unusual to see a player who is a top baseball and basketball recruit at the same time.

However for football and baseball it is much different. Every year there seems to be a handful of talented high school prospects with great potential in both sports.

Think of past football-baseball guys such as John Elway and Deion Sanders. More recently it has been names such as Joe Mauer, Roscoe Crosby, Drew Henson, Adam Dunn, Quincy Carter and Josh Booty.

With the help of the AllianceSports.com football recruiting experts and our group of TeamOneBaseball.com scouts, we have compiled a list of the 10 best football-baseball prospects for this year's high school senior class.

TeamOneBaseball.com's Top-10 Baseball/Football Prospects
High School Class of 2002

Rank Name
Position (BB-FB)
What You Need to Know
1Jeff Francoeur
OF - Safety
Parkview (GA)HS
He's a potential first-rounder in baseball with 6-4 size, a Big League arm and above-average speed. Football recruiters are all over him. SECRecruiting.com reports that Georgia Tech and Clemson are near the top of his list.
2Bo Flowers
Walter Lutheran (IL) HS
Football recruiting experts compare Flowers to Michael Vick. Baseball scouts make the comparison to Brian Jordan. He's a 6.7 runner with a "plus" bat with the potential to hit for power and average.
3Elijah Dukes
Hillsborough (FL) HS
"Man-child" is a perfect term for this incredible two-sport star. A punishing linebacker in football, he shows Big League bat speed and power and a lot of other tools on the baseball field. Dukes was the top prospect at the Team One East Coast Showcase in July.
4Mike Nixon
C - QB
Sunnyslope (AZ) HS
Nixon is being recruited in both sports by powerhouses such as Arizona State, Oregon and UCLA. He has early round potential in baseball despite skipping the nation's top showcases and scouting combines the past summer.
5Justin Tyler
OF/3B - QB
Jones County (GA) HS
Tyler shows top-10 round potential in baseball as an emerging power hiiter. He is being courted as a two-sport star at many of the top football/baseball programs in the Southeast including Clemson, Georgia, Auburn and Mississipi.
6Anthony Martinez
P - QB
Patrick Henry (VA) HS
A high-80's pitcher in baseball, Martinez has great size at 6-4. Right now his football talents are ahead of his baseball skills. He ranks among the top quarterbacks in the nation and is leaning toward Virginia, Michigan or Tennessee, according to Kurelic's Midwest Recruiting. VirginiaSports.com also had a great feature on Martinez recently.
7Drew Stanton
3B/P - QB
Harrison (MI) HS
Stanton is a relative unknown nationally to many baseball scouts but has the talent to be an early round pick. He's also one of the top QB's in the Midwest and has already committed to Michigan State to play both sports.
8Drew Olson
Piedmont (CA) HS
One of the nation's top-five QB's, Olson also shows draftable skills in baseball as a catcher. Right now, football seems to be his quickest route to success. Olson is said to be looking at Michigan, Washington, UCLA and Tennessee, according to Pac10Recruiting.com.
9Brandon Jones
3B/OF - QB
Wewahitchka (FL) HS
Jones shows a potential "plus" bat and smooth hands and feet on the baseball field. He's also being heavily pursued in football as a QB.
10Jemalle Cornelius
Fort Meade (FL) HS
Rivals100.com football recruiting experts call Cornelius "one of the best athletes in Florida this year." The blazing speed carries over onto the baseball field, but right now Cornelius has more upside in football, despite being a baseball player his whole life and a late-comer to football.

Other Top Baseball-Football Prospects

Wes Bankston, OF-QB, Plano East (TX) HS
Being recruited in both sports by many top schools in the South, Bankston has a strong arm and power potential in baseball.

Jeff Cook, SS - Safety, Notre Dame (LA) HS

Steve Gostkowski, P - Kicker, Madison Central (MS) HS

Brent Hall, 3B/SS - QB, The Hunn School (NJ)
Hall is being pursued as a two-sport star by schools such as Boston College and Rutgers.

Denard Span, OF - WR, Hillsborough (FL) HS
Everyone knows about Span and baseball as he played on Team USA (18U) this summer and is a potential first-rounder. But now colleges are finding out about his big-play capablities on the football field.

Keith Williams, OF - QB, Glen Burnie (MD) HS
Getting attention from both football and baseball recruiters, Williams should play both sports at the Division I level next year.
