FSU strikes again in South Florida

For the past few years Florida State has reestablished its recruiting presence in South Florida. Over the summer Gulliver Prep offensive lineman Evan Bellamy committed to the 'Noles and on Wednesday evening his teammate Anthony Leon, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound safety told the FSU coaches he plans on signing with the Tribe.

Leon, who is probably better known for his achievements in basketball, caught the attention of the Seminole coaching staff during a recent visit to South Florida. After reviewing a little more film, the decision was made to extend a scholarship late last month. Just a couple weeks later he decided to pull the trigger for FSU.

"Since they offered me I've been thinking hard about it and I looked at the depth chart and it just seems like a good fit for me," Leon told Warchant.com. "Everything was positive... I like the academic program, their football program and the environment."

The sleeper safety says he will make an unofficial visit the weekend of the Maryland game (11/29). Even though he is better known in basketball circles, Leon is really starting to turn some heads in football.

"The kid is a natural athlete," Butler told Warchant.com in a recent interview. "He just didn't have anybody out there pushing him for football. He decided that, 'hey coach, you have a good thing going and I want to be a part of this and make it happen.'"

With his talents on the hardcourt, Leon is considering the possibility of playing two sports when he arrives at FSU. But for now he is concentrating on the current season and improving his academics.

Even though the 'Noles are the only major school to offer a scholarship so far, Miami has been showing a lot of interest as of late. He is cousins with former UM star Sean Taylor so it will be interesting to see what happens if the 'Canes follow up with an offer.

So far this season, Leon has picked off two passes and has over 30 passes so far.
