Devils crush Spartans

It wasn't a complete 40 minute performance for the Blue Devils Saturday, but a 59 point first half outburst was more than enough to bury UNC-Greensboro and seal a blowout 102-69 victory over the Spartans.

Duke started fast out of the gates, taking a 9-0 lead in just over three minutes of action, paced by quick baskets from Sean Dockery, Josh McRoberts, and Shelden Williams.

The Spartans closed the gap to 12-7 briefly but Duke proceeded to extend the lead back into double figures and didn't look back the rest of the afternoon at Greensboro Coliseum.

For the game, Duke's J.J. Redick again dominated, leading all scorers with 35 points on a day when he connected on 6-of-11 three point shots and hit 62.5 percent from the field.

It wasn't a one man show though, as the post tandem of Williams and McRoberts combined for 36 points, with McRoberts pouring in 15 points against the undersized Spartans.

Duke entered the game hoping to keep the tempo moving at a fast pace to force ball handling troubles for a turnover prone UNC-Greensboro team.

The Spartans looked like they were well on their way to a 20 plus turnover outing, but they rebounded to only give it away 16 times as Duke's defense appeared to lose their edge after jumping out to the early big lead.

The Spartans finished the day shooting 46 percent from the floor, probably a number that will be too high to please Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The Blue Devils did show marked improvement in the rebounding column, pounding the Spartans on the boards 37-21, including an impressive 11 offensive rebounds on an afternoon when Duke only missed 24 shots from the field.

Duke improved to 12-0 on the season and will now turn to a final pre-conference schedule tilt against a tough Bucknell team at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday.

Bucknell made a splash nationally by beating Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year and is off to another strong start this year, having already recorded wins over Syracuse and DePaul on their way to an 8-2 start.
