Freshman QB reinstated at Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Freshman quarterback Ike Whitaker is back on the Virginia Tech football team, coach Frank Beamer said Monday.

Whitaker, 18, a 6-foot-4, 206-pound redshirt player from Germantown, Md., was suspended for violating team rules on March 2, a day after he was charged with public intoxication, underage possession of alcohol and destruction of property in an incident on Tech's campus.

Whitaker pleaded no contest to the charges in Montgomery County District General Court on March 23. Judge Gino Williams ruled that he would wipe the three misdemeanor charges from Whitaker's record if he stayed out of trouble for a year, paid to fix a broken dorm window, served 25 hours of community service and attended alcohol awareness classes, the Roanoke Times reported.

Whitaker joined Monday's spring practice.

''We asked Ike to get some things done and he has made progress in that regard,'' Beamer said. ''...I feel comfortable that Ike will work hard to be a successful part of this football program.''
