The Wright Stuff Report: Jimmy Clausen

All throughout June, current Miami Hurricane starting QB and 2002 Elite 11 MVP Kyle Wright will take time out from his busy schedule at Miami to review some of the nation's top quarterbacks.

Today in the first edition of The Wright Stuff Report, Wright takes a closer look at Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian and Notre Dame commitment Jimmy Clausen.

Clausen, a 6-3, 200 pounder, committed to Notre Dame in late April over offers from USC, Tennessee, South Carolina, Michigan, LSU and many more.

He is regarded by most as the nation's top quarterback and threw for 2,778 yards and 30 touchdowns last fall, completing 157 of 230 passes with five interceptions.

  • Strong arm
  • Good field vision
  • Stands tall in the pocket and delivers the ball
  • Athletic
  • Throws well enough on the run
  • Doesn't take many straight drops from under center

Wright's Wrapup: When watching Jimmy Clausen on tape, there are not too many flaws that jump out to me, the kid can play. I think he definitely has a big advantage in the fact that he has some other really talented playmakers on his team. Also, I think he will definitely have to adjust to taking straight drop backs at the next level. He is not very balanced in that sense.

Check back on Monday when I review Michigan commit and Elite 11 selection Ryan Mallett!

Kyle Wright earned the Counselors' MVP at the 2002 Elite 11 and was widely regarded as the top quarterback in the country coming out of Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista in the Class of 2003, after passing for 2,825 yards and 37 touchdowns with just four interceptions as a senior and selecting Miami over USC and Texas. Wright led the Hurricanes to a 9-3 record in 2005 in his first season as a starter, passing for 2,403 yards and 18 touchdowns (an ACC best) and finishing as the conference's second-highest rated passer. Wright should vie to be one one of college football's top QBs over the next two falls.

Wright's evaluations are made from reviewing the film clips of each quarterback that are available online and are his own evaluations based on his experiences playing the position both at Miami and also from coming up through the high school ranks as a highly-regarded quarterback. They do not necessarily reflect the views of Student Sports.
