Pac-Tending 06-21-06

"Ultimately, an institution has to want to [comply with Title IX]. There's no silver bullet. If there aren't consequences, the likelihood of change is very slim."

- Executive Director of the Women's Sports Foundation Donna Lopiano, explaining that institutions cannot be compelled to comply with Title IX but will likely find it in their best interests to do so.

Preparations for future athletic seasons are already being made at the Creek as a possible conference challenge in men's basketball is being worked on by the Pac-10 and Big 12 conferences. If successful, the games between the two conferences' teams would begin in November 2007.

Meanwhile at NCAA HQ, text messaging restrictions were recommended last week that would allow coaches to text message prospective student-athletes only between 4-8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekends [according to the prospective student-athlete's local time] after September 1 of the prospect's junior year in high school.
