Lymon 'OK' after suffering off-field injury

After he sustained a non-football-related, accidental injury to his eye early Monday morning, Boilermaker wide receiver Selwyn Lymon has not been seriously harmed, early indications suggest.

Interim assistant athletic director/football sports information director Tom Schott said that initial indications are that Lymon should be sidelined three to five days, adding later that Lymon's made substantial improvement since sustaining the injury.

"From what we understand, he's OK," Schott said late Monday afternoon. "We're still in the fact-finding mode, from what Coach (Joe) Tiller has told me."

Purdue vice president of university relations Joe Bennett confirmed to GoldandBlack.com earlier in the day that an incident took place that resulted in a "non-football-related" injury. He deferred further comment to the athletic department.

"Nobody is in trouble or anything like that," Bennett said. "(The incident) caused a minor injury. At least we hope it's a minor injury."

GoldandBlack.com learned that Lymon was shot in the eye with an air gun, after he and teammates had been shooting the guns while wearing protective goggles. Lymon was struck with a plastic pellet after removing his eyewear.

Citing the fact that there were no criminal issues to pursue, the Purdue University Police Department deferred to the university in releasing details of the incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. Monday morning.

After sitting out last season as an academic non-qualifier, Lymon has caught 21 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns. He's arguably the highest regarded recruit to have ever signed with Purdue.

GoldandBlack.com will have more information as it becomes available.
