Zoubek shines in Blue-White scrimmage

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has been telling anybody who would listen that all four members of Duke's prized freshmen class will play significant roles this season.

And while Saturday night's Blue-White scrimmage was nly a preseason game, all four freshmen proved their coach right.

Brian Zoubek was a force in the lane, scoring 27 total points and ripping down 10 rebounds.

His freshman teammates joined in on the fun as well.

Jon Scheyer handled the ball well and contributed five assists, while Lance Thomas and Gerald Henderson each netted double figure totals on the night.

Duke divided the scrimmage into two separate 15 minute games.

In the first game, the blue team gained an upset win over the white squad.

The white squad consisted of Josh McRoberts, Scheyer, Thomas, DeMarcus Nelson, Martynas Pocius, and walkon Steve Johnson.

The victorious blue squad featured Zoubek, Henderson, David McClure, Jamal Boykin, Jordan Davidson, and walkon Nick Sutton.

Zoubek led the blue sqaud with 12 points while McClure played a very solid all around game with six points, four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

Thomas paced the white team in scoring with 10, but the blue squad's 59 percent field goal shooting was too much to overcome.

After a halftime ceremony honored the 1985-86 Blue Devil team that Coach K said laid the foundation for the success the Blue Devil program has had over the last two decades, the rosters changed the teams started a new game from scratch.

Boykin, Pocius, Nelson, Thomas, Johnson, and Sutton formed the blue squad. They faced a powerful white team of McRoberts, Scheyer, Zoubek, McClure, and Henderson.

The blue team claimed a lopsided 34-17 victory behind Zoubek's dominating performance.

The freshman seven footer poured in 15 points, grabbed six rebounds, and blocked three shots, displaying an all around game.

Zoubek ran the floor well, showed good low post moves, was a key factor on both the offensive and defensive glass, and all in all dazzled the Blue Devil fans who filled Cameron.

Henderson also played very well in the second 15 minute session, totaling three assists without a turnover to go along with eight points of 4-of-6 shooting.

Duke's first exhibition game is this Thursday against Shaw University.

Check back Sunday for analysis from the Blue-White scrimmage.
