Duke soars past Shaw
Balanced scoring and a suffocating defense easily propelled Duke to an exhibition victory over Shaw University Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Freshman guard Jon Scheyer's 19 points paced five Blue Devils in double figures as Duke rolled to a 96-45 victory over former Duke player Robert Brickey's Bears.
The Blue Devils opened the game with six straight points and never trailed in the contest, using a 40-2 advantage in points off turnovers to win in blowout fashion.
Duke forced 29 Shaw turnovers and limited the Bears to just 32 percent field goal shooting.
Josh McRoberts, DeMarcus Nelson, Lance Thomas, and Martynas Pocius joined Scheyer in double figures, but it was McRoberts that put together the best overall game.
The super sophomore not only had 11 points, but dished out six terrific assists to go along with eight rebounds, four steals, and a block.
McRoberts led several fast breaks for the Devils, and had a couple of crowd wowing assists with no look passes and one behind the back assist.
Duke built a 51-24 halftime lead and Thomas' layup with nine seconds remaining gave Duke its final points and built the largest margin of the game.
Scheyer did significant damage from three point range, knocking down a trio of triples against mainly a zone defense.
Pocius also had a hat trick from the three point stripe on his way to 12 points.
Duke shot 56.5 percent from the floor and recorded assists on 26 of its 39 baskets.
Freshman center Brian Zoubek had another strong outing after dominating last Saturday's Blue-White scrimmage. The 7-1 talent from New Jersey was one point away from a double-double. His 11 rebounds included seven offensive boards against a Bears team that had no player taller than 6-6.
Duke returns to exhibition play Saturday night against North Carolina Central in preparation for the season opener against Columbia on November 12th.
