HARTFORD, Conn. - Freshman Jerome Dyson scored 20 points as No. 21 Connecticut routed Central Arkansas 88-59 in the opening round of the Hispanic College Fund Classic.
The Huskies (2-0) used a smothering man-to-man defense and speedy transition game to run away from the Bears (1-2), a team playing its first season in Division I.
UConn jumped to a quick 10-2 lead after Central Arkansas (1-2) opened the game with an ally-oop dunk from Frederick Campbell to Durrell Nevels.
Campbell led the Bears with 15 points, one shy of his career high.
The Huskies used their pressure defense to go on a 12-0 run midway through the half, opening the lead to 26-9. They led 44-28 at the break.
Dyson shot 3-of-5 from three-point range. The 6-foot-3 guard also had several spectacular dunks off steals that got the crowd at the Hartford Civic Center into the game.
The victory gives UConn a 21-game home winning streak, dating back to a February 13, 2005 loss to North Carolina. The team has won 12 consecutive games at the Hartford Civic Center.
