A new season brings new ideas at the Creek and one of those is the newly-implemented postgraduate scholarship sponsored by Oroweat. A grant worth $10,000 to the winner will be awarded annually to one female and one male Pac-10 student-athlete beginning this season. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and be in their last eligible year of intercollegiate athletics.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, women's golf will move away from the regional model for championship berths and instead move toward a true at-large selection process. The women's gymnastics committee proposed several rules modifications for gymnastics competition.





California

California's athletic department has launched a Heisman Trophy website for junior receiver DeSean Jackson.



Oregon State

In women's golf, junior Jessi Gebhardt was named a National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar.

In football, three athletes - defensive linemen Myles Wade and Simi Fili and receiver Rishard Matthews - are academically ineligible while senior defensive lineman Dexter Manley II has indicated that he will transfer.

In men's hoop, the Ducks have received verbal commitments from center Michael Dunigan and guard Matthew Humphrey.

Oregon has announced that they will add baseball and competitive cheer as sports and drop wrestling.



Washington

Receivers Anthony Boyles and Devin Aguilar are academically ineligible.



Arizona State

In women's track and field, the Sun Devils were named as the All-Academic Team of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.




USC

USC received a verbal commitment from quarterback Drew McAllister and reportedly will play safety for the Trojans.



Arizona

In softball, pitcher Taryne Mowatt was named as the nation's best female athlete by ESPN.




WSU

In men's hoop, senior guards Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver were selected to the final 12-man roster for the USA men's hoop team that will compete in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this month.

In tennis, the Cougars signed Russian tennis athlete Ekaterina Kamendova to a letter of intent.



UCLA

In women's soccer, Shannon MacMillan was hired as an assistant coach.

In men's golf, assistant coach Derek Freeman was named as the head coach.



Stanford

In women's hoop, center Jayne Appel and guard Candice Wiggins were named to the USA squad that will compete at the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this month.
