Two players suspended for Clemson

It has been a relatively quiet preseason for Bobby Bowden and Florida State. Outside of third string offensive lineman Matt Hardrick being dismissed from the team for violating team rules and backup fullback Joe Surratt breaking his leg, it has been business as usual on the Al Dunlap practice fields.

That came to an end on Friday.

According to head coach Bobby Bowden, senior wide receiver Joslin Shaw and sophomore defensive end Kevin McNeil have been suspended for the Clemson game for violation of team rules.

"Shaw and McNeil will not play," Bowden said. "That's just for this game, that's as far as I can go (say)... Violation of team rules."

Although neither player is listed as a starter in the most recently released depth chart, both would have likely seen significant playing against the Tigers. The loss of McNeil is especially damaging to FSU's depth at defensive end. With junior college transfer Brian Coulter coming up short of academic requirements, there will be only four scholarship players at defensive end for Clemson, and one of them, sophomore Justin Mincey, was a backup at defensive tackle last season. That just leaves three defensive ends with any game experience to carry the load this Monday.

There are seven wide receivers with game experience so the loss of Shaw should be easier to overcome. His absence should mean more playing time for sophomores Damon McDaniel and Rod Owens, who were both listed behind Shaw on the depth chart.

Bowden also announced that walk-on Jeremy Franklin will also not play against Clemson. Bowden did not offer any other details on Franklin's status.
