Cougs Crush Aztecs

The Aztecs from San Diego State were an unknown quantity to Washington State football head coach Bill Doba before the game and the first quarter. But after the first quarter when the Aztecs scored the first touchdown and a field goal - the Cougars solved their riddle with 31 unanswered points and 469 yards passing from redshirt senior quarterback Alex Brink on their way to cruising to a 45-17 win at Qwest Field in Seattle.

Brink and the Cougars torched the Aztec defensive secondary repeatedly in the game - racking up a school record 38 completions in going 38-for-47 while tossing five touchdowns to four different receivers - including the inaugural touchdown for true freshman receiver Jeshua Anderson. After the Aztecs scored a field goal on their opening possession followed by a touchdown on their ensuing possession, the much-beleaguered Cougar defense held them scoreless until a late fourth quarter touchdown. Senior receiver Michael Bumpus led all receivers with 10 catches for 118 yards but three receivers cracked the 100-yard mark along with Bumpus [Brandon Gibson with seven catches for 116 yards and Charles Dillon with eight catches for 100 yards.

With the win, Wazzu evens their 2007 season record at 1-1 and will play their home opener against Idaho next week at Martin Stadium in Pullman at 7pm on Saturday, September 15.
