Big Ten Week 2 Recap
The Illini struggled before putting away I-AA Western Illinois 21-0. Illinois led 7-0 at halftime, then scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 139 yards for the Illini.
Next: Saturday, at Syracuse.
The Hoosiers built a big lead, then held on to beat Western Michigan 37-27. The Hoosiers forced five turnovers and also had five sacks. IU led 34-7 in the third quarter before Western Michigan rallied. It was Indiana's 18th consecutive victory over a MAC school. It was the first time WMU ever had hosted a Big Ten school.
Next: Saturday, vs. Akron.
QB Jake Christensen threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns including three to TE Tony Moeaki and the defense allowed just five first downs as the Hawkeyes blasted Syracuse 35-0. Iowa, which allowed 103 total yards, led 28-0 at halftime. Iowa hasn't allowed a touchdown this season.
Next: Saturday, at Iowa State.
The Wolverines' defense was punished again, as Oregon rang up 624 yards in an embarrassingly easy 39-7 rout of Michigan. It was the second-highest total ever allowed by Michigan, which is 0-2 at home for the first time since 1959. The Wolverines actually led 7-3 late in the first quarter before the roof collapsed on the Big House. QB Chad Henne was injured late in the first half and may not play this week against Notre Dame.
Next: Saturday, vs. Notre Dame.
Michigan State
The Spartans pulled away in the second half for a 28-17 victory over Bowling Green. Brian Hoyer threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns, and WR Devin Thomas caught four passes for 156 yards and a TD. It was tied at 14 at halftime. The Spartans had seven sacks.
Next: Saturday, vs. Pittsburgh.
The Golden Gophers avoided a monumental collapse and beat Miami University 41-35 in three overtimes. Minnesota, which lost to MAC member Bowling Green in its opener, led Miami 28-12 with 8:35 left before the RedHawks rallied. Both teams missed field goals in the second overtime before Minnesota's Jamal Harris picked off a pass in the third overtime. A 2-yard TD run by Amir Pinnix won it for the Golden Gophers.
Next: Saturday, at Florida Atlantic.
The Wildcats rallied late to down Nevada 36-31. The Wolf Pack won last season at home, and looked to be ready to pull the upset in Evanston before QB C.J. Bacher led a last-minute, 80-yard drive. He capped it with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Ross Lane with 21 seconds left. Nevada led 24-10 at halftime.
Next: Saturday, vs. Duke.
Ohio State
The Buckeyes' offense wasn't productive, but the defense showed up to play. OSU forced 14 punts in a 20-2 victory over Akron. The Zips finished with 69 yards and three first downs. Ohio State led 3-2 at halftime, but the offense cranked it up a bit in the second half. Sophomore TB Chris Wells ran for 143 yards on 20 carries.
Next: Saturday, at Washington.
Penn State
The Nittany Lions' defense controlled the game in a 31-10 victory over Notre Dame. Penn State held an opponent without an offensive touchdown for the second consecutive game. Notre Dame failed to score an offensive touchdown for the second game in a row and was held to zero yards rushing. TB Austin Scott ran for two second-half touchdowns for Penn State.
Next: Saturday, vs. Buffalo.
Curtis Painter tied a school record with six TD passes as the Boilermakes hammered I-AA Eastern Illinois 52-6. Painter he now shares the record with Drew Brees and Kyle Orton. Painter was 38 of 49 for 348 yards. Purdue led 31-3 at halftime. Lightning caused the game to be delayed at the start of the third quarter. Most of the fans had left by the time the game resumed a little more than an hour later.
Next: Saturday, vs. Central Michigan.
The Badgers played poorly before escaping with a 20-13 victory over UNLV, which is expected to finish last in the Mountain West Conference. QB Tyler Donovan scored on a 29-yard run with 1:53 left to put the Badgers ahead for good. The Badgers' secondary gave up 258 passing yards.
