Several memorable moments from rivalry
What was the most memorable moment in the storied Arizona-Arizona State rivalry?
In anticipation of the annual Battle for the Territorial Cup on Dec. 1, Fox Sports Net Arizona is asking fans to pick their favorite memory.
Was it Arizona State's 56-14 rout in Tucson that capped its perfect 1996 regular season?
Could it be Chuck Cecil's 106-yard interception return for a touchdown in 1986 that help give ASU its only loss of the year?
What about Trung Canidate's 288 rushing yards in 1998?
Or was it "The Catch," "The Streak" or "The Run?"
There have been many memorable events to come out of the storied UA/ASU football rivalry that dates back to 1899, and fans can vote through Nov. 26.
There are 10 choices to choose from -- five from both schools -- and fans can go to FSN Arizona's website at www.foxsports.com/arizona to vote for their favorite. The top-five selections will then be unveiled on Friday, Nov. 30 when the network airs its annual one-hour "Duel in the Desert Preview Show" live from the Fox Sports Grill in Scottsdale at 5:30 p.m.
So far, nearly 2300 votes have been cast.
Here is the list of moments to vote for in one person's opinion:
1986 – Chuck Cecil's 106-yard interception return for a touchdown gives the Sun Devils their first loss of the year
1975 – "The Catch": John Jefferson's touchdown grab
1996 – Arizona State ends its perfect regular season with a 56-14 rout in Tucson
1982-90 – "The Streak": Arizona goes 8-0-1 against ASU in this span
1998 – Trung Canidate runs for 288 yards as the Wildcats win 50-42
2005 – Terry Richardson's 2005 touchdown punt return lifts the Devils to a comeback win
1982 – UA upsets No. 6 ASU, knocks ASU out of the Rose Bowl
1957 – ASU caps its first-ever undefeated season with a 47-7 win
1983 – Max Zendejas' game winning field goal as time expires
1992 – "The Run": Kevin Galbreath's touchdown run gives ASU a 7-6 win
Cecil's return likely remains the most electric play in UA football history in terms of its magnitude, scope, and significance. The fact that Cecil went on to an outstanding pro career, including the Sports Illustrated label as "The NFL's Dirtiest Player" only added to the UA legend.
I was in my first year as UA beat writer when Canidate shredded the Devils in 1998. He was simply unstoppable, ripping off touchdown runs at will. The high-scoring game was unbelievably entertaining, and a huge win given Arizona's run for the Rose Bowl that year. Of course, UCLA's collapse the next weekend in Miami ruined the Cats' trip to Pasadena, but that's another story entirely.
Even last year's game when ASU came to Tucson and knocked Willie Tuitama out of the game en route to spoiling the Cats' bowl chances was must-see TV.
Each chapter of the historic matchup seems to have dimensions and layers of sub-plots simply too juicy to ignore.
This year's matchup is no different, given ASU's success under first-year coach Dennis Erickson and the UA's late-season resurgence.
Can Arizona shock the nation twice in two weeks, and keep the Devils out of the Rose Bowl?
