Johnson charge dismissed

A disorderly conduct charge against Alabama defensive back Rashad Johnson has been dropped by the Tuscaloosa Police Department in a plea arrangement. Among other conditions, Johnson must perform 40 hours of community service.

Johnson, an All-Southeastern Conference safety, was arrested at nearly 3 a.m. on Feb.23 at The Legacy, a bar located on the University Boulevard stretch known as the Strip.

Comment on both sides was limited to prepared statements.

"I regret that my actions contributed to an arrest on Feb. 23, 2008, and want to make it clear that I support the Tuscaloosa Police Department and their attempts to maintain public safety," Johnson's statement read.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Ken Swindle's release read as follows: "I'm very thankful and proud that the young man stepped up and accepted responsibility for his actions on that particular night. I'm thankful he apologized to the Tuscaloosa Police Department."

Johnson's attorney, former Alabama offensive lineman Josh Swords, said last week that surveillance video from the bar did not fully corroborate details in the police report, and that the TPD had offered to drop the charge with conditions. The TPD refuted that statement several days later.

Johnson led Alabama in tackles and interceptions last season with 94 and six, respectively.
