Ennis standout talks about verbal commitment

SMU head coach June Jones is in the process of turning around the Mustang football program one prospect at a time. With already one of the best looking classes over the last decade, the 2009 commitment list got even sweeter for Jones this past week.

"Coach Odum had called me and was asking about what I was going to do," explained Ennis athlete Deonte McDade. "I told him that my family and I had talked about it and that I had decided to go to SMU. So I verbally committed."

Safeties coach Derrick Odum had visited McDade last week with his game against Lancaster. It was that appearance and effort by the coaching staff that got McDade's attention.

"I decided that I wanted to stay close to home and SMU is a good school. I want to go to there."

McDade becomes the 11th offensive commitment for the Ponies. Badly needing a prospect on the defensive side of the ball, Jones felt that McDade was valuable enough to make the room.

"That tells me that they really wanted me and they feel like I'm a good player. Now I need to go up there and show them that they made a good choice."

Standing at 5-foot-10, 165-pounds, McDade appears to be undersized to many schools but the natural athlete will fit perfectly into Jones run and shoot offense.
