Miller adds to UA baseball talent

On Wednesday, the University of Alabama baseball team will add to their talented young roster with the signing of St. Paul's outfielder Andrew Miller. Although the 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete was also being looked at for the gridiron, an early scholarship offer by Tide Coach Jim Wells sealed the deal early.

"Coach (Mitch) Gaspard really turned me on to the Alabama program when he was at Northwestern State. He recruited me early before he came to Alabama, and when he went to Tuscaloosa, he just kept it up," said Miller of the Tide's assistant coach. "I had my options open. I wasn't just thinking about Alabama, but when they offered, it just made a lot of sense to play there. A lot of people were trying to say negative things about Alabama's coaching staff, but I really liked what Coach Gaspard and Coach Wells had to say and the way they treated me."

As a junior, Miller hit around .420 with four home runs and 30 stolen bases.

"They are recruiting me for either left or right field. I have pitched a little too but I don't plan on doing that for Alabama. I am more of a speed guy than a power guy. I like to get on base and make things happen."

Miller was one of the Tide's first 2009 baseball commits last spring.

"Auburn was about to offer me and South Alabama had offered," said Miller. "I also heard a lot from South Florida and LSU. LSU kept recruiting me long after I committed to Alabama."

Although Miller will have a pretty well-known St. Paul's teammate in AJ McCarron at the Capstone, the pair aren't expected to become roommates.

"As a baseball player, I can live off campus and AJ has to live in the football dorms his first year so I doubt we see too much of each other though we will still be pretty good friends. I thought about trying football out at Alabama, but in the end it is best for me to stay on top of baseball. That is all I am doing right now, just working out and getting ready for the season."
