Gibson expects a better mix

One aspect of Michigan's secondary mix ought to be better this season, according to defensive backs coach Tony Gibson. The man who is guiding the Wolverines when it comes to cornerbacks and safeties will have a better handle on everything.

That man, of course, is Gibson himself. There were times last season when the U-M secondary coach handled safeties, while former defensive coordinator Scott Shafer mentored the cornerbacks. At other times, Gibson had the corners and Shafer the safeties.

This season, Gibson has the entire secondary under new defensive coordinator Greg Robinson. Gibson definitely prefers that arrangement, and hopes it works well.

"We've got to get guys playing together, on the same page," Gibson said. "It's hard when you split your secondary like we did last year. Last year, I coached corners, then I coached safeties. You just couldn't ever jell into what we were doing."

Gibson expects a number of changes in how Michigan goes about its defensive business this season. The one he's most geared up about, not surprisingly, is the secondary.
