Gateway makes big statement in win
If the Gateway Gators were looking to make a statement in the WPIAL on Thursday night, they succeeded.
In a big way.
Snagging the regional television spotlight on FSN, the Gators romped all over Latrobe, 49-0.
Once again led by a multifaceted offensive attack, Gateway (3-0) was able to score quickly and easily in the first half, causing the 35-point mercy rule's rolling clock to go into effect before halftime.
Running back Orne Bey, who led the Gators in Week 1, stepped up once again, rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns. His fellow back Brandon Felder also scored two touchdowns - one on a 36-yard scamper and the other on a punt return.
Four-year starting quarterback Rob Kalkstein attempted just nine passes in the game but completed seven of them, for 114 yards. 25 of those yards came on a touchdown pass to Steve Vranka in the second quarter.
But even in the big win, Gateway head coach Terry Smith thought the game was far from perfect. When asked after the game about where his team needed to improve, he focused on the team's lone turnover - a Dayonne Nunley fumble early in the game that resulted in a three-and-out for Latrobe.
"One (turnover) is too many," Smith said. "We've just got to take better care of the football and build a little bit more depth up front and just keep getting better week to week."
