Kafka named Big Ten Player of Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior quarterback Mike Kafka (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) has been named the Big Ten co-Offensive Player of the Week after a career outing during Saturday night's game at Syracuse.

Getting off to a fast start, Kafka completed his first 16 passes in a row to break a 47-year-old Northwestern record for consecutive completions. The previous mark of 15 was set by Tom Myers in 1962. Kafka went on to connect on 83.3 percent of his passes (35-of-42) for a career-best 390 yards and three touchdowns. His completion percentage broke the previous school record of 80.6 percent set by Brett Basanez against Illinois in 2005.

In addition, Kafka became the first Big Ten player with a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game since Penn State's Zack Mills on Sept. 4, 2004.

The award is the second of Kafka's career; he also was honored following his Big Ten quarterback rushing record of 217 yards against Minnesota last season. In addition, he has been named an honorable mention quarterback Performer of the Week by College Football Performance.
