Weber out 4-to-6 weeks with tendon tear
Thomas Weber is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks with a torn tendon in the quadriceps/groin area of his kicking leg according to multiple Arizona State team sources.
Sun Devil coach Dennis Erickson said in his weekly radio show with KTAR Tuesday morning that Weber will likely miss the next five or six games.
The injury was revealed Monday in an MRI.
Weber, the 2007 Lou Groza Award winner as the nation's top placekicker, will not need surgery according to a team source.
It is unclear when Weber was injured but the kicker made 5-of-6 field goal attempts in ASU's season opener against Idaho State and appeared to be fine in the subsequent week-and-a-half of practice.
Weber felt discomfort in practice last Thursday and could not play in Saturday's game against Louisiana-Monroe.
Weber warmed up before the game, but true freshman walk-on Bobby Wenzig handled the placekicking duties for the Sun Devils on the night, making his only field goal attempt and all five of his PAT attempts.
Wenzig is expected to remain as the team's placekicker for Saturday's game at Georgia.
Junior punter Trevor Hankins also some experience at the position, as does senior linebacker Mike Nixon dating back to his high school career.
As a sophomore in 2008, Weber made 19-of-25 field goal attempts and 29-of-30 PAT attempts, leading the Sun Devils in scoring for the second straight season. He made 24-of-25 field goal attempts and 46-of-28 PATs in his award winning season as a redshirt freshman.
