Big Ten Title, Elite Eight Trip In The Same Year Quite A Feat For Michigan

Regular-season success in college basketball is nice, but programs are defined by what they do in postseason play. The legacy of a regular-season title can be scarred a bit if a club gets upset right off the bat in the Big Dance, and vice versa — a disappointing regular season can be forgotten with a deep postseason run.

The most memorable campaigns are when a team enjoys success in both the regular season and the postseason, and that's exactly what the Michigan Wolverines' basketball program achieved this year.

It won its 15th Big Ten regular-season championship March 4 when it took down Michigan State, 69-50, putting the cap on an outstanding sophomore regular season for head coach Juwan Howard.

Despite getting upset by UCLA in the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight last night, the postseason portion of Michigan's season is still viewed by most as a success as well.

Yes, the club missed a golden opportunity to make its third Final Four since 2013, but it is nevertheless difficult to tab any postseason run that ends in the Elite Eight a "disappointment."

This is especially true when considering the Maize and Blue lost arguably their best player (or at worse, second best) in senior forward Isaiah Livers to injury before the Big Dance even began, and still managed to come within a shot or two of the Final Four.

No, 2020-21 wasn't the most successful season in school history or perhaps even in the top four or five, but it still joins a fairly short list of past Wolverine teams who enjoyed immense success in both the regular season and the postseason.

Before we dive into the numbers, here are a few statistics to keep in mind: this year marked the 105th season in Michigan basketball history, and the 82nd NCAA Tournament (an event that was created in 1939).
