Goalies to rotate, but Hunwick starts opener

Michigan coach Red Berenson said Wednesday that senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick will start for the Wolverines in Saturday's season opener against Mercyhurst. Hunwick is competing for the No. 1 job with classmate Bryan Hogan, who will see action in Sunday's exhibition against Western Ontario …
"I'm starting Hunwick because he finished the year on such a good note and I think he deserves to start the first game," Berenson said.
"We're trying to win games. It's not about being fair but what's best for the team. But I personally believe we are a two-goalie team."
The starter in each of Michigan's first 36 games last season, Hogan went 18-15-1 with a 2.33 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. He suffered an injury in U-M's second-to-last regular season game, forcing Hunwick - a veteran of just three career appearances - into the lineup.
In nine starts, including eight playoff contests, Hunwick went 7-2-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. During the Wolverines' seven-game winning streak during the CCHA and NCAA postseason, Hunwick posted a 1.43 GAA and a .935 save percentage.
Berenson expects Hunwick to play at the same level he finished the 2009-10 campaign at.
"I think he will," Berenson said. "I don't think it's a matter of curiosity; I'm expecting him to compete hard for the starting job and I'm expecting Hogan to compete hard and if they do, we should be a good team in goal.
"Our team should be ready to play Saturday for Hunwick and should be ready to have a good game for Hogan on Sunday. We went through this with Billy Sauer and Hogan [in 2008-09] and there was a definite trend and you know what that was.
"But this is the plan and we'll see how it goes. I told the goalies today exactly what we're going to do and we'll start that Saturday - we'll rotate."
