Michigan Basketball: Wilson, Wagner Will Test NBA Waters
As expected, Michigan redshirt sophomore forward D.J. Wilson and sophomore center Moritz Wagner are going to test the NBA waters. Both announced Monday they will enter the NBA Draft without hiring agents.
"I give glory to God each and everyday for allowing me to be part of the University of Michgian and our basketball program," Wilson tweeted on Monday. "With that being said, after discussing it with my family and coaches, I will be entering my name into the NBA draft without hiring an agent. That you all for your continued support & Go Blue!"
"I appreciate all of the support I continue to receive at the University of Michigan," Wagner tweeted. "After talking with the coaches and my family, I have decided to enter my name to the NBA draft without hiring an agent. Dankeschon for all! Go Blue!"
Wilson and Wagner will retain their collegiate eligibility and have the option to return to U-M. The NCAA's deadline to withdraw from the draft is May 24. They'll both learn later this month whether they've been invited to the NBA Draft Combine, held in Chicago from May 9-14, and will be allowed to work out for individual teams and speak with coaches and front office representatives.
Both players recently received grades from the undergraduate advisory committee, consisting of NBA team executives. Those grades are confidential and will not be released publicly. Players may declare for the draft multiple times and choose to return to school, as long as they don't forfeit their amateur status.
Wilson averaged 15.6 points on 53.8 shooting with 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in postseason play, including 26 against Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament and 12 points in a Sweet 16 loss to Oregon. He missed a lay-up and a box out in the game and blamed himself for the loss. He averaged 11 points and 5.3 rebounds per game this year.
Wagner averaged 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds, shooting 39.5 percent from the floor.
Projections have varied on the two prospects, but most have them in the late first to second round. Most have them returning to U-M next season.
