Missouri City (Texas) Ridge Point four-star tight end Mustapha Muhammad is officially a part of the Michigan football program.

Measurables

• At Nike's Opening regional camp in Houston on Feb. 4, 2017, Muhammad ran a 4.96 40 and a 4.44 20-yard shuttle. He also leapt 33.1 inches in the vertical jump and tallied a 38-foot toss in the power throw. Muhammad's performance earned him a 93.87 score in the Nike+ Football Rating.

Statistics

• As a senior, Muhammad missed several games with a toe injury but still managed to tally 20 receptions for 294 yards (14.7 yards per catch) and three touchdowns.

• During his junior year, Muhammad played in all 11 games during the season and made 31 catches for 438 yards (14.1 yards per catch) and four touchdowns.

• In his first year on varsity as a sophomore, Muhammad had 17 catches for 304 yards (17.9 yards per catch) and three scores.

• His team won district championships every campaign.

Honors

• Named an Under Armour All-American as a senior.

• Received the Dick Peebles Offensive Player of the Year as presented by the Houston Touchdown Club as a senior.

• Named a unanimous selection as a first-team all-district performer in District 2-6A in 2016 and 2017 by the Fort Bend Star.

• 2017 All-Greater Houston first team as a senior and a second-team choice as a junior.

• Was an academic all-district student-athlete as a sophomore, junior and senior.

All-Star Games And Camps

• Will play in the Under Armour All-American Game on Jan. 4, 2018.

• Participated in Nike's The Opening regional camp in Houston in 2016 and 2017.

• Competed at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge in Atlanta before heading into his junior year.

Recruitment

Pledged to Michigan on Oct. 20, 2017.

• Chose Michigan over UCLA, Clemson, LSU, Texas and a host of others, and also received some attention from Texas A&M after Jimbo Fisher was hired as head coach.

• Bonded early with former tight ends coach and current running backs coach Jay Harbaugh and has also formed a quick, strong bond with tight ends coach Greg Frey.

Notable

• Born on August 10, 2000

• Uncle Adam Henry played wide receiver at McNeese State and signed with the New Orleans Saints in 1994 but was out of the league by 1996. He then coached at his alma mater and then with the Oakland Raiders, at LSU, with the San Francisco 49ers and is now the wide receivers coach with the New York Giants.

2018 Projection

When Michigan gets ready to kick things off in 2018, Ian Bunting could still be on the roster as a fifth-year senior. He wasn't overly involved in 2017, and younger tight ends seem to have passed him by, but he'll have one year of eligibility remaining.

Zach Gentry and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. will be redshirt juniors, and Sean McKeon and Nick Eubanks will both be juniors. There is a noticeable gap after Eubanks and McKeon since U-M didn't land a tight end in 2017, which is why it's quite important that U-M has landed three in 2018, with Muhammad, Hamden (Conn.) Hamden Hall Country Day School three-star Luke Schoonmaker and Traverse City (Mich.) West three-star Ryan Hayes.

They Said It

Muhammad's personal trainer, Doug Smith: "I also think he has a great ability to be coached. He’s a special kid and really does love to block. Those two things set him apart from everyone else. All of the guys around him love him, though. He’s been a leader since he stepped up and took control of his team. He’s been raised by some great people, and has an amazing mom, dad and stepdad. That has a lot to do with his character. His parents are stand-up people and that has definitely rubbed off on Mustapha."

Rivals.com Texas analyst Nick Krueger: "He’s such a big target and has a great catch radius. He catches the ball quite naturally as well — he always catches it with his hands and has great tendencies there. Muhammad is a guy you can count on to move the chains, but he can also run a seam downfield. He really has the characteristics to make him a special player in the passing game. When he catches the ball, he’s hard to deal with because he is put together and is athletic for his size.

"Muhammad is a very smart kid and he’s done a good job putting on mass in the right places. He has that athleticism you like to see, so I think within a couple of seasons he’ll be just fine all around."
