Interim head coach Matt Canada knows how big of a challenge awaits his Maryland team heading into the Big House.

In his weekly press conference, he talked about how good of a team the Wolverines have and how strong the Wolverine coaching staff is.

“Obviously, some of the best recruits each and every year, we all know that,” Canada said. “Coach Harbuagh is one of the best coaches in our game. Offensively, they do a lot of things. They create a lot of different challenges for our defense. On defense, Coach Brown is one of the best defensive coordinators I’ve ever gone against.”

The area that really stood out about Michigan is their defense, which now ranks as the No. 1 statistical defense in the country.

“What they do on defense is as good as anybody in the country, so it’s a tremendous that way,” Canada said. “Our players are excited to go play.”

Canada said he knows how fearsome Michigan’s pass rush is and pointed out fifth-year senior defensive end Chase Winoivch as one of Michigan’s best pass rushers.

“Chase, he plays so hard,” Canada said. “Their whole defense does., I don’t want that to come off wrong. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him because he plays so hard and he’s an intense football player.”

Canada also singled out junior linebacker Devin Bush as a traditional Michigan linebacker

“They run to the football,” Canada said. “They do a great job getting their hands up and knock a lot of balls down. There’s a reason they are one of the top defenses in the country. They have great players and they play really, really hard.”

On the injury front, Canada said that Maryland running back Lorenzo Harrison III is out for the season after suffering a knee injury. Maryland running back Jake Fink will not be back against the Wolverines due to a broken hand.

Canada said he is hopeful everybody else injured will be back.

Michigan is the first of many difficult tests for the Terrapins. Canada is well aware of what his team is about to go against. When asked about the Big Ten gauntlet, he had a good analogy for what the division is like.

“Jump in the deep water with the big sharks,” Canada said.
