Observations and notes from Michigan Football fall roster

One of the year's best days is the first day of fall camp practice and roster release day.

Michigan Football has updated its 2023 roster ahead of fall camp and with a new group of freshmen, an elite transfer class, and plenty of offseason changes, there are plenty of things to note. Let's get into it.

Worth the weight

It's no secret that Strength and Conditioning Coach Ben Herbert has been a secret weapon to Michigan's recent success. We have heard many conversations about players changing their physical build this offseason, and a few players jump out.

Blake Corum is listed as only 3 lbs heavier than last season. Corum recently said he had added a decent amount of muscle, so the slight weight change suggests he is stronger and leaner.

QB JJ McCarthy is visibly bigger in terms of muscle mass, but has only gained 8 lbs from last season.

Will Johnson is now up to 202 lbs.

LB Micah Pollard has gained 15 lbs, up to 221 lbs.

Freshman WR Karmello English has added 15 lbs since graduating high school, up to 190 lbs.

EDGE Josiah Stewart is back to 245 lbs, the weight he played his freshman season at Coastal Carolina. Stewart was down to 230 lbs last season when they moved him to OLB.

EDGE Derrick Moore has lost 21 lbs since last season. Moore was 279 lbs as a freshman and is now down to 258 lbs. Moore was once thought of as a tweener who could play inside, clearly focused on getting quicker and more athletic on the outside.

S Rod Moore has gained 13 lbs since last season, now at 198 lbs.

WR Roman Wilson is up 7 lbs, now 192 lbs.

LB Ernest Hausmann played at 220 lbs at Nebraska last season, he is now 237 lbs.

TE Deakon Tonielli had massive gains. The freshman is now 251 lbs after ending his high school season at 215 lbs.

LB Semaj Bridgeman, another big freshman jump, 16 lbs up to 246 lbs.

LB Breoon Ishmail, freshman again, up 26 lbs to 246 lbs.

RB CJ Stokes and RB Cole Cabana, thought of as smaller speed backs each added weight. Stokes is now 205 lbs and Cabana is up to 198 lbs from 180.

LB Junior Colson added 12 lbs, up to 247 lbs.

DT Brooks Bahr has added nearly 30 lbs since high school, up to 298 lbs.

RT Trente Jones is up 14 lbs to 325 lbs.

OL Andrew Gentry is entering his second season after being away from football for two years. Gentry added 15 lbs, up to 327 lbs.

After losing weight last season, LG Trevor Keegan is up 15 lbs to 320 lbs.

Stanford transfer RT Myles Hinton has added 20 lbs since last season, now at 340 lbs.

Freshman TE Zach Marshall is up 12 lbs to 232 lbs.

EDGE Aymeric Koumba has added a whopping 24 lbs, now up to 254 lbs.

DT Kris Jenkins is up to 305 lbs, adding 20 lbs from last year.

DT Kenneth Grant is down 17 lbs to 339 lbs.

DL Enow Etta added an incredible 35 lbs since high school, now at 295 lbs.

Position Changes

Brandon Mann played quarterback last season and is now listed as a defensive back at 6'3" 231 lbs.

Breeon Ishmail's weight gain comes with being listed as an EDGE. He was an ATH/LB recruit.

Jason Hewlett was an athlete recruit, listed at LB.

Kalel Mullings change to permanent RB is official, as expected.

QB Declan Byle is no longer listed on the roster.

Nico Andrigetto has changed from RB to DB.

Max Bredeson is listed as TE, expected to play an H-Back/FB role in 2023.
