U-M draws No. 2 seed in Midwest Region

The Wolverines are officially going dancing.

After winning the Big Ten regular-season championship by three full games and posting a 25-8 record though the year, Michigan earned a No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region.

The Wolverines will play Wofford in the Round of 64 in Milwaukee Thursday. With a win, Michigan will advance to play the winner of the game between No. 7 seed Texas and No. 10 seed Arizona State.

The Terriers went 20-12 this season and won the Southern Conference Tournament championship to earn an auto-bid and the No. 15 seed in the region.

The Midwest Region is fairly stacked. Michigan is looking at a likely Sweet 16 matchup with No. 3 seed Duke (who plays No. 14 seed Mercer), if the team survives the first weekend of play.

The rest of the region's first-round matchups are: No. 1 seed Wichita State vs. either Cal Poly of Texas Southern; No. 8 seed Kentucky vs. No, 9 seed Kansas State; No 5 seed St Louis vs. either North Carolina State or Xavier, No. 4 seed Louisville vs. No. 13 seed Manhattan and No. 6 seed UMass vs. either Iowa or Tennessee.

This marks the fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament for the team, after advancing to the NCAA Tournament National Championship Game as a No. 4 seed in 2013; losing to Ohio in the first round of the 2012 tournament as a No. 4 seed; and losing to Duke in the second round of the 2011 tournament as a No. 8 seed.

Between 1996-2011, the Wolverines did not make the tournament in consecutive seasons. This current run of NCAA Tournament appearances is the longest since the program went to five-straight Big Dances, including two appearances in the championship game, from 1992-1996.

This is also the team's highest seeding since the 1993 Fab Five squad earned a No. 1 seed. Since then, the Wolverines have been a No. 3 seed in 1994, a No. 9 seed in 1995, a No. 7 seed in 1996, a No. 3 in 1998, a No. 10 seed in 2009, a No. 8 seed in 2011, a No. 4 seed in 2012 and a No. 4 seed in 2013.

Including Michigan, the Big Ten will be represented by six teams in this year's NCAA Tournament.

Wisconsin is a No. 2 seed in the West Region, whose No. 1 seed is Arizona. The Badgers will play No. 15 seed American in the first round, with a potential second-round matchup with either No. 7 seed Oregon or No. 10 seed BYU.

Nebraska is also in the West Region, as the No. 11 seed. The Cornhuskers will play No. 6 seed Baylor in the first round, with a potential matchup with No. 3 seed Creighton - which is just down the road from Nebraska, located in Omaha, Neb. - in the second round.

Michigan State, after winning the Big Ten's auto-bid with a conference tournament title, earned the No. 4 seed in the East Region. The Spartans will play No. 14 seed Delaware in the first round, with a likely matchup with No. 5 seed Cincinnati in the second round.

Ohio State is a No. 6 seed in the South Region, whose No. 1 seed is Florida. The Buckeyes will play No. 11 seed Dayton in the first round. Although the two teams are from the same state, the Buckeyes and Flyers have only played six times ever, and none since the 2008 NCAA Tournament. With a win, the Buckeyes would likely play No. 3 seed Syracuse, with a potential matchup with potential matchup with No. 2 seed Kansas in the Sweet 16.

Iowa is in the No. 11 seed play-in game in the Midwest Region, needing to beat Tennessee to advance to the Round Of 64.
