Give me your ideas and we'll discuss them as a staff on Monday when we all return to the office. Simple fact is, nothing outside of politics or religion is as polarizing as the Tigers threads on this board, and we simply don't allow politics or religion to be discussed.

Have always allowed the Tigers threads because we consider ourselves a sports bar and because we know a good number of our patrons are Detroiters (plus it's better business to keep those folks in your bar then to tell them to go someplace else - if you can't understand that then you've never been in a paying customers business). At the same time, we're not going to deal with the constant back and forth for the next five months until football season starts.

So throw out your best idea and we'll discuss them and come up with a solution.

Thanks

i honestly cant see how this is a big deal

1) Create a new board under the "other topics" heading, or

2) Have ONE OFFICIAL TIGERS THREAD per game... not unlike what Balas did with hoops in the Big Ten Tournament, NCAA Tournament, etc.

"we consider ourselves a sports bar" -- that's awesome... that's a great way to look at this board, imo. I love that.

My vote is to treat Tigers threads like any other OT topic. Additionally, in the spirit of diplomacy, maybe treat Tigers "in-game" posts like we treat other "in-game" posts... create an "in-game" thread and sort of massage the posts into that thread. This way, people can talk Tigers and people can scan thread view without spending "all that time" clicking on page 2, page 3, or page 4 (heaven forbid) in order to see what else is going on.

Posted on 4/6 10:36 AM | IP: Logged

Once people win this fight. They'll just start whining about something else. People who want to complain will always find something to complain about.

to talk about right now. I agree this is a sports bar atmosphere, loved that analogy, and I consider this board more than simply Michigan sports. It's great to be able to talk about other topics. If you don't like the Tigers threads, there a simple solution - don't read them.

UM related news for the majority of baseball season. We are in the college sports doldrums...why not give increased coverage to pro sports?

Posted on 4/6 10:38 AM | IP: Logged

threads alone. I am not a tiger fan, nor a baseball fan in general, but there seems to be alot of common interest on this board regarding the tigers. If posters in the down time (b/w spring football and fall camp) share that common bond, have at it. I will skip over the posts and not miss a beat.

I love you don't allow politics or religion, as you shouldn't. I'm not a Tigers fan and get tired of the threads, but I don't see any reason to ban them. I agree this is kind of a sports bar and if it's sports let people talk them. It's not tough to just skip over them.

Posted on 4/6 10:39 AM | IP: Logged

I think you should just let the threads live with a general reminder to try to steer conversation towards Michigan related sports. I think Tigers threats do clutter the board a bit but at the end of the day it's not that hard to gloss over them.

I think the problem is that baseball lives for 162 days a year (or more if the Tigers make the playoffs), and we see the same memes again and again (Leyland's lineup are terrible, Inge sucks, Cabrera is fat, etc.). But short of banning discussion of everything off topic, which I wouldn't want, I don't think there is a good solution to the rampant Tigers threads. Even a game thread would clog up the board.

Posted on 4/6 10:40 AM | IP: Logged

thread with most being tigers threads. it literally takes 2 minutes to quickly read a thread title and move on to the next, my god people

Posted on 4/6 10:41 AM | IP: Logged

If offenders don't get it, ban them for posting for a short period of time (1-2 days).

The guys that want to talk Tigers will go in the chat. The play by play that they give each other can be done much more efficiently in there.

A chat room should be open during the Red Wings games, Tigers games and even during the Michigan BBall and Football games.

board for 3 hours a day, 162 days a year"....

Posted on 4/6 10:41 AM | IP: Logged

...that are not confined to the game-thread. Just by cutting down on the play-by-play stuff, those disinterested in Detroit sports will see the "clutter" significantly reduced, and appreciate, I think, the compromise that's been drawn.

Posted on 4/6 10:42 AM | IP: Logged

Have a game thread. Then delete all the stupid "wow nice pitch", posts that are their own subjects outside of the game thread.

That's obviously a larger discussion, but as this forum continues to grow in numbers, it's harder and harder to maintain good discussions because they quickly move off the first page. As a consequence, we see the same topics posted repeatedly, both because people don't see old threads or because if you want to continue to have the discussion new threads need to be started. In topic view, every time somebody posts in an existing discussion that topic moves to the top of the list, which keeps the discussion alive.

For Tigers games (and the same applies to in-game threads for football and basketball games) a default of topic view will for the most part keep all posts within a single thread because of this dynamic of keeping that thread at the top of the page.

Posted on 4/6 10:44 AM | IP: Logged

People post OT garbage constantly. It's pretty easy to just move right on by. It's not like people are holding back good Michigan content because of tigers posts.

Posted on 4/6 10:45 AM | IP: Logged

bomb other Tiger posts outside of the official thread. My issue isn't with Tigers posts per se, as I like to chat Reds from time to time (I love the analogy to a "sports bar"), but rather with the volume of individual posts dedicated to them. Clean it up, and I'm fine with it.

Posted on 4/6 10:47 AM | IP: Logged

but it doesn't bother me one bit. I just scroll right on by. It takes an extra 30 seconds to do so. I don't see why people make such a big deal of it.

Posted on 4/6 10:49 AM | IP: Logged

I get that people don't want to use the "main boards" or free boards within the Michigan Rivals site so they can stay away from trolls... so why not open the Off Topic Fort that inherits permissions from The Fort. You then ask nicely that people post all their off-topic stuff in there (Tigers, Red Wings, etc). When people don't get the clue (nature of the beast when dealing with forums) you get a little more aggressive.

Posted on 4/6 10:49 AM | IP: Logged

from a different time zone, do you really know when the Tigers are playing.

I don't object to it much, because there is little else regarding M athletics going on. We still have baseball & softball, M spring football and recruiting, but a lot of that is re-hashed stuff and during the summer months is slows down until football starts again.

I can see both sides of this however.

If it looks like a lot of postings are happening, then maybe a proactive Tiger Thread may be the best way of curbing it rather than paging through tens of Tigers posts.

I also think M fans need to realize with its proximity to Detroit, many people here are fans of both, toss in the Red Wings too.

Why was it such a big deal? There was really no M news at that time. Many things are discussed in this venue. Not everyone is going to be pleased. Again sometimes people on this board are not happy unless they are unhappy about something.

that says "hey, we don't need 20 different Tigers threads during the game. Try and reply to threads already started, and we also don't need new threads bitching about Tiger's threads - just as big of an issue."

I don't know. Seems like people respond to Mods "warnings" somewhat well initially, but all hell might break loose again at some point.

I know as mods you don't want to restrict what we can post on here (other than religion/politics). I really think its up to the posters to "think before they post." Try and respect the Tigers Haters by not cluttering the board so much, and Tigers Haters: try to quit complaining about the Tigers' Fans.

wishful thinking...

Posted on 4/6 10:54 AM | IP: Logged

Make it a rule that all Tiger related crap goes into that thread for the entire day until the next one is started.

This way all of the Tiger comments will be at least a page back for anyone who wants to comment on UofM related stuff for the rest of the afternoon/evening. And for those who want to be part of that thread - they will have to go back a page or two to get involved w/ it.

Posted on 4/6 10:57 AM | IP: Logged

don't root for either team, so these threads drive me nuts. But I understand both why other posters and the site itself want to maintain these threads. Keeping one official thread is a nice balance. Everyone who wants to weigh in can, but the multiple threads don't clutter up the site for those, like me, who just want to discuss UMich athletics.

I don't see a problem with the threads I just think its funny how fired up people get about the threads

Posted on 4/6 11:01 AM | IP: Logged

....any and all posts that complain about Tigers threads. This will instantly cut down Tigers-related posts by about 25 percent, will keep patrons "in the sports bar," will encourage today's whiners to be tomorrow's Tiger thread skippers and raise the cumulative civility level.

Posted on 4/6 11:01 AM | IP: Logged

the whiners will still whine b/c that's what they do, whine.

First, there is no good solution. So many Michigan fans are Tiger fans that they want to vent, and feel they are free to do so. On the other hand, many Michigan fans are not Tiger fans and find all the threads here an annoying distraction and side-show. Any "solution" is going to irritate someone.

The way I see it, just one opinion, is that this is a Michigan Wolverine's board, and everyone who signs up and pays is doing so to follow and discuss the University of Michigan. That is the implicit contract for signing up. It would seem a reasonable conclusion that those who want to discuss the Tigers' every inning find a Tigers venue somewhere, and sign up to converse with others interested in that team.

As a Tiger fan, this opinion probably upsets me. (Free speech!) However, this site is about Michigan U., so at the end of the day, it doesn't seem fair to impose Tiger-Mania on everyone who has paid to be here specifically for the Michigan Wolverines. My opinion is to keep this board focused on what it was created for, is marketed as, and everyone pays for. Again, any decision likely leaves a number of subscribers unhappy.
