I expect Spath is ready to be done with it too.  Let's see who enrolls in school (freshmen and incumbents) this coming August and is on our roster when practice starts and move forward from there.

And BTW, since Easter is upon us, let me beat Wolverine 74 to the punch by saying that even if a "divider" returns next season, anyone can repent and redeem themselves, eh?

I would agree that the best thing to do is sit back and see what unfolds. Michigan has a really strong recruiting class set to arrive with a lot of high-character kids. As for this team, something was forged these past few weeks and you hope that carries over with the guys that were creating some of the divide in the locker room. As I said, the leadership will be strong from the get-go with Bennett in charge for an entire year. I think he learned this season that if there is discord, he has to clean up the mess immediately. That took too long but finally the captains asserted themselves and the coaches helped.

Red wants to go out on top, and he knows what it will take for that to happen. I suspect we'll see a few changes to the roster and you'll learn those in a few days/weeks.

I think it's still a worthy topic. This team showed what they are capable of, but some selfish play and guys not working hard, just cost this team one of the best streaks in college sports. It's sad a few screwed over what could've been a very memorable season.

Ok, the topic of team unity is important, that I am all over.

But I'm not as interested in the who's of this team vs. the how's of the next.  How do we move forward?

IIRC Porter took the team on a weekend retreat someplace, and that did wonders right out of the gate.  Lets take that, make proper improvements to make it a tradition, and go foreward.

I'm not as concerned about which player. But to make the next step next year the problems from this year definitely need to be addressed. It seemed to be late in the year and it's sad it wasn't addressed earlier as they showed what they can do when united.

The need to look at this season and make sure it doesn't repeat itself.

Nah, I'm of the opinion that had Racine (or any other goaltender) stepped up earlier in the year, the "divide" would have been a footnote, had it even been news.  There are surly personalities on every team, they only become an issue when the team loses.  Goaltending wasn't the only reason this team lost early, but it was a huge reason.  Things are looking up with the way Racine played down the stretch.

It's not the goalie.  he's just the one who clearly shows mental issues faster than the rest of the team.

Most people here think Billy Sauer was not a good goalie, but forget the two records he set his senior season- goals against average and Save Percentage (which was eclipsed by Hunwick twice).

He was a very good goalie, but laden with a divided team.  And for an early arriver (he was 17 when he got on campus)- he needed someone to help him out.

Once you take the goalies head out of the game for non hockey issues, it's over.

How any of the goalies would have "stepped up" with team issues, I don't see.  We've seen this movie before, we know how it ends.

And we see what happens when team unity is good- thanks to Porter, Sauer set some nice records.  So he had a bad game in Denver- he was good.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.  Had Racine played the entire season like he played the last few weeks, we would be in the tournament, we'd all assume the team had solid leadership, and there would be no talk about divisions within the team.  That's how the movie ended the last 25 years.  Believe me, the team had some rotten apples back in the 90s, but they were rarely the subject of discussion because the team was winning.  I guess you could say those teams won due to solid leadership, sure, but they also had above average goaltending, which we lacked for the better part of a season.  In other words, did the team start winning the last few weeks because leadership emerged, or because goaltending improved dramatically?  I'd say it was more of the latter, but understand you would say it's the former.

It's the old saying adversity doesn't build character, it shows it. We obviously had some divide on this team and it hurt it. I tend to agree that it's tough for the goalie to play well when the team in front of him is divided and causing a distraction and probably not helping out like they need to, especially a young goalie.

Yea- right now, what I want to hear is that the team understands the consequences.  Who is irrelevant- the season is over, we start again.  But the Freshmen, Sophomores, and  Junior need to spend time 1) with each other to understand how to bring themselves together quickly, and 2) make sure the incoming freshmen knows how important this is.

These guys had a lot of talent and heart that they could not express, and they seem to know why.

Oh, and remember the last time we finished 7th, but did get into the tournament... the following year was pretty good.

Oh, pt 2, before that, we had a few years where team chemistry was questionable, which also lead to a Frozen Four and a Hobey.

They know.

The long term question- can they come up with a system that builds the team unity stronger before the season starts that can continue as a tradition?

(do note the tone is building vs. prevention)

absolutley. i think with bennett being captain (most likely) i think the team will be in a better place than it was last year right from the get go.

My biggest concern is that they stated there was a DIVIDE!  My question. The seniors and staff did the most to keep the team focused. What party was selfish and are they coming back ?  If those who looked at themselves and their wants instead of thinking team are back we will go through this again. If those who are back understand what it means to play as a team we may have done a lo of growing up- complements to the older players and the coaching staff.

I wonder who , or whom where the secessionists? Not that it would make me feel any different towards UM. I'd be disappointed, but still support the TEAM.

I don't expect the dividers to be back. I also think the leadership will be stronger from the get-go next season. Bennett is a natural leader and Copp will almost surely step up into that role also.
