Any more the one source? All I saw was on CHN writer and a lot of retweats. CHN called him gone a week ago when Jon left and then the rumours starting going the other way.

appears this is a done deal.

Well that's to bad, really thought we might get one more year from him.  At least it's happening now and not the last week of August.  Everyone will know what they need to work on, what spots need to be filled, and what opportunities await them.

Oh well . . . . but Michael, "light on overall talent?"  Let's start right off with the half-empty approach shall we?

Do you disagree on the blue line? Who has high-end talent among the returning players? Bennett and ... that's it. Chiasson is a mucker, which is fine. Muckers can be valuable but he's not a great skater, not great with the puck. Serville probably has the second-most talent but he hasn't put it together. Szuma is a poor-man's Serville. Clare. Don't even get me started on Clare.

I like this team coming back. I really do, but Clare has to grow up in a hurry and anchor a blue-line pair alongside one of the two freshmen while Bennett teams with the other rookie. Serville, Chiasson, Szuma and Lohan battle it out to be the third pairing.

There is no doubt, the defense will have the most question marks and concerns, assuming Racine continues to show improvement and stability in the net.

Let's hope Mac Bennett remains in school, otherwise, yikes.

Team needs to have 9 D on the roster if possible next year.
Downing for Trouba
de Jong for Merrill
Lohan for Moffie
S Hyman for Carrick

Given that the Michigan defense is like the Twilight Zone with players getting injured or not showing up, this team needs the bodies with so many unproven defenseman.

Bennett-Downing
Clare - de Jong
Serville - Szuma
Chiasson - Lohan
S Hyman

Clare is a question mark given his junior year issues.
Serville probably has the most potential for improvement.
Szuma and Chiasson will battle for the 6th through 9th spots.

Not that the team was physical this year, but the 2013-14 team will have little physical presence next year with Trouba departing and K Lynch graduating.   Copp and Guptill are probably the two most physical players, but neither hit like Trouba or K Lynch.  I hope the Michigan defense (Clare, Serville, Szuma, Chiasson) takes the next 6 months to improve their strength and physical play.  While their offense and physical size may be limited, they can make themselves tougher to play against (like the Ferris State defense).

Trouba would have really loved the Michigan experience to stay for a second season given what he's personally accomplished and his talent level.  Good luck to him, he was a physical and offensive talent.   I'm really not sure what this team has going into next year.   If the forwards are consistent (PDG, Nieves, Guptill) and Compher-Motte-Allen contribute as freshman, they should gain an NCAA at-large berth.   But like 3 of the past 4 years, there are certainly concerns that we could have another prolonged monthly slump as well in which case it would need to win 3 games in the BIG Tournament.   With Minnesota and Michigan losing players this offseason, Wisconsin may be the favorite to win the BIG if the Badgers avoid any defections.

My reaction is (was) that this season is over, we are looking ahead to next season, I'm not prepared to say already that our returning players are low on talent.  Maybe next November or December I will think that, but not now.

Bennett is good; Clare I thought was a good player in 2011-12, so lack of talent is not his issue; and Serville was a mid-third-round NHL draft choice, so lack of talent isn't his issue either.  And, Szuma improved significantly over the course of last year.  So, based on those players and looking ahead to next year, I don't think the returnees are low on overall talent.  Whether they perform well is a separate question and remains to be seen.

Just a FYI, there are no plans to bring in Spencer Hyman next year.

I don't really understand this argument. Most of these kids are two or three years into their careers and have shown the kind of players they're going to be. Can they improve? You bet, and they need to. If all of them play to their max potential, Michigan will be fine, but evaluating a kid's overall talent is different than saying how he will perform. I agree that these kids could all perform well, but they don't have a ton of natural talent, at least not to the level typical of a Michigan's defensive corps.

Ehhh . . . IIRC Jay Vancik,, Greg Pateryn and Lee Moffie didn't really come into their own until their junior seasons.  Serville I would say has not yet performed to the level of his talent.  Clare probably performed to the level of his talent in 2011-12 but obviously did not last season.

But the main reason for my negative reaction to your original comment was, why, months before the first puck of the 2013-14 season is dropped, are we already denigrating these kids?  These are principal players that we are depending for success in 2013-14.  I'm for expecting them to do the job they need to do.

Clare needs to grow up in a hurry?  Was I wrong in assuming he was the player that isn't running out of eligibility that wasn't good enough to sign a pro deal that was going to be leaving?
