Michigan held its annual Big Man Camp last Saturday at the Big House, and like the title insinuates, the camp was meant for offensive and defensive linemen.

Michigan currently has four linemen committed in its 2018 class, and three of the four were in attendance, with Traverse City (Mich.) West three-star offensive tackle Ryan Hayes being the lone exception.

The Wolverines’ sole defensive line commit in the class, Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child four-star strongside defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, spoke about what it was like going through drills while being surrounded by all of his future college coaches.

“It was a great experience with all the coaches and building those relationships,” he said. “It was just a lot of fun competing with all the other guys.”

Hutchinson explained that he didn’t get much of a chance to spend time with Greg Mattison, his future position coach, but was still able to learn plenty of important things on the day.

“I actually didn’t talk that much with Coach [Greg] Mattison,” Hutchinson said. “I talked a lot with Coach Carr though. He was teaching me throughout all the drills and fixing my technique up, and it was a really good experience.”

Although they’ll someday be future teammates, Hutchinson had a chance to go up against fellow Michigan commit Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central three-star offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield in drills.

“It was a lot of fun playing against him and seeing the future competition once we get to Michigan,” he explained. “It’ll be a lot of fun once we get there.”

With high school recruits attending so many offseason camps nowadays, and social media being more prevalent than ever before, players who are committed to a school often familiarize themselves with each other before ever even stepping on campus. That’s the exact case with Michigan’s committed linemen.

“I think we’re just a pretty bonded group already,” Hutchinson said. “When we get to college, we’re already going to have a lot of good chemistry.

“We just talked pretty casual today, because we’ve already been talking to each other for a while since we’ve all been committed. We just all have a really good relationship.”

Ever since Jim Harbaugh took over in Ann Arbor, team chemistry is something that has often been praised by those both in and around the program. With several of Michigan’s commits already appearing to be great friends, it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon.
