The Michigan coaches have tried to plant some flags in Alabama and it’s worked with 2016 linebacker Dytarious Johnson and running back Kingston Davis. Another prospect from the Yellowhammer State is on Michigan’s radar in the form of Foley High School David Hendrick. The 2017 signal caller was on Michigan’s campus in June for the Aerial Assault passing camp and loved his time in Ann Arbor.

“It was my first time in Ann Arbor and it was just a tremendous experience,” Hendrick said. “I got to talk to a lot of U-M players like Denard Robinson, Devin Gardner, and Jake Rudock. They were all really helpful with giving me tips and being interactive.

“I performed really well there too. One of the coaches told me I placed in the top 5% out of all of the campers. I was one of the only kids that threw the ball 45-plus yards through the goalpost on me knees and "birdied" Coach [Jim] Harbaugh's football golf hole, which only a handful of kids did.”

The camp was a bit unorthodox from playing football golf, catching pop flies, and playing dodgeball, but the overall experience made a big impact on Hendrick, and so did Harbaugh. The 6-3, 196-pounder gushed about Michigan’s head coach.

“I got to talk to Coach Harbaugh after the camp and had a great conversation with him about how it was one of the best camps I've been to,” Hendrick explained. “I also told him that I loved Ann Arbor and we talked briefly about me returning on an unofficial visit.

“I felt like we connected really well and I love his presence as a coach. He has such great energy and a great way of connecting with people. He is very intelligent and is such a great coach for a quarterback to be around. In his first year at Michigan and with Jake rudock, he and the team had a tremendous year. Such a quick turnaround like that shows how great of a coach he is and it would be such an honor to play for him.”

Hendrick returned for an unofficial visit Nov. 7 to take in the game against Rutgers and almost couldn’t believe the experience.

“When I came back for the Rutgers game, the atmosphere was amazing,” Hendrick expressed. “There's nothing like having more than 100,000 people at a football game and being in the Big House.

“The facilities were fantastic too. I got the opportunity to talk to Jay Harbaugh a good bit and he followed me on Twitter and we keep in touch that way. Every coach and player I talked to made me enjoy Ann Arbor even more and I can't wait to go back again.”

Hendrick admits to being an Alabama fan but there’s something about Michigan that makes him want an offer from the Maize and Blue, perhaps more than the Tide. A couple of other schools are high on his list as well.

“I've grown up an Alabama fan so it would be a dream come true to get an offer from them, but I don't think I would be going there,” he said. “I really loved Michigan, along with Stanford and USC so an Alabama offer definitely would not end it all for me. I am trying to find the best fit for myself and I believe Michigan is definitely a possibility for that perfect fit for me.”

The junior quarterback still awaits his first offer and a few schools could be close.

“I think that Duke is close, and possibly East Carolina,” Hendrick said. “I think Stanford could offer after I go to their camp this summer because they don't offer QB’s unless they go to their camp.

“I am calling schools to try to get the first offer because it is the hardest. I hope I get one soon and I'm going to work harder than anybody to make sure it happens.”

The drive is in Hendrick and he spoke passionately about doing everything in his power to earn attention and offers. He plans to travel and compete wherever he can.

“I know I will be going to Stanford’s camp and junior day and possibly their spring game too,” Hendrick explained. “I’ll be at Michigan, Duke, USC, and am going to try to take a visit to or camp at Miami and North Carolina.

“I will continue calling coaches and staying in contact with them to set up these dates and get everything to the next step to get the offer.”

Michigan may have it’s top quarterback targets in 2017 but with Hendrick’s plan and previous contact with the Wolverines there could be an opportunity there in some capacity. If not, the previously mentioned schools could be in the mix soon.
