Michigan fifth-year senior Henry Poggi came to Michigan as a highly-touted defensive tackle, but has since found a home at fullback.
He is expected to form a solid duo with fellow fifth-year senior Khalid Hill at a position that is perhaps a bit of a dying breed in college football.
Might we see another player at the position challenge for playing time in 2017?
“[Freshman] Ben Mason has brought a lot of energy and physicality to the position,” Poggi explained. “Luckily, he’s my camp roommate, so I’ve had a blast with him.”
Mason isn’t the only Wolverine freshmen who has impressed Poggi this camp though.
“Some of the catches these freshmen receivers have been making are incredible,” he exclaimed.
So who will be the quarterback throwing the passes to these freshmen receivers on Saturday?
“I have no idea who our starting quarterback will be,” Poggi said with a laugh. “I only focus on blocking.”
Although his main task is primarily blocking, that could come as a bigger challenge than usual on Saturday against the Gators.
“They have two really good defensive ends,” he revealed. “Their whole defensive front is very fast and explosive.
“The excitement for that game is pretty much through the roof for us. We’re really going to find out what kind of team we have, because we have to be locked in right away. We’ve seen the same guys every day in practice, so it’ll be nice to play against someone else.”
Poggi talked about his pregame routine that he performs before each contest.
“I like to eat a lot of ice cream before the game and cool down my core body temperature,” he chuckled. “It’s usually vanilla with chocolate syrup and oreos. I eat it at night after our team meeting.”
Finally, fifth-year senior linebacker Mike McCray and senior left tackle Mason Cole were named team captains on Saturday night, and Poggi touched on how special each of those players are, and how special the senior class is as a whole.
“You couldn’t ask for two better guys than Mike and Mason,” Poggi said. “Mason is going to have one hell of a season and he’s going to be an All-American. Mike is also a great player, and it’s so special for our program to have these two leaders.
“This senior class is very close. We’ve been through a lot, and those tough times have really brought us together.”
