In a bit of a surprise, Michigan senior Derrick Walton Jr. earned second team, not first team All-Big Ten honors. Minnesota's Nate Mason became the first, first-team Gopher since 2005 after averaging 15.5 points and about five assists per game.
Ethan Happ of Wisconsin, Iowa’s Peter Jok, Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan and Maryland’s Melo Trimble rounded out the All-Big Ten team.
Michigan State’s Miles Bridges, Illinois’ Malcolm Hill, Northwestern’s Bryan McIntosh, Walton Jr. and Koenig (coaches) and Nebraska’s Tai Webster (media) made the second team.
Walton averaged 14.5 points and 4.7 rebounds and led Michigan with 139 assists, 16 of them coming in a March 5 blowout win of Nebraska (a program record). He shot 43.4 percent from the floor, 41.9 percent from long range and also led the 20-11 Wolverines (10-8 Big Ten) with 33 steals in 31 games.
This season he became the first Wolverine to record over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists in a career (1,333P-526R-449A). He became just the fourth guard in U-M history to surpass 500 rebounds and 43rd overall Wolverine to reach the 500 pleateau. He is nearing U-M's all-time top five for career assists and recently broke U-M legend Gary Grant's 30-year record for most assists in a game with 16 at Nebraska (March 5). With a team-best 139 assists he became just the sixth Wolverine to post three seasons of 100-plus assists during a career.
Sophomore Moritz Wagner earned honorable mention from both the coaches and the media, while senior Zak Irvin earned honorable mention in the media voting as well as the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award for U-M.
Wagner is averaging 12.4 points and 4.4 rebounds. He is shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 43.2 percent from long range and has notched the third most three-pointers (41) on the team. He registered four 20-plus point games including a career-best 24 points in the upset win over No. 14 Purdue (Feb. 25). He finished that game 10-for-15 and had 22 points in the first half.
Irvin, who is closing in on the No. 2 spot for career games played (135), received honorable mention honors for the second straight year. Averaging 12.6 points per game, he is the 21st Wolverine to surpass 1,500 career points (1,505). With 41 three-pointers this season, he is closing in on the No. three spot on U-M's all-time triples list (228). This season, he has a team-best 24 games scoring in double figures and has added 4.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists.
