Former Michigan head basketball coach Steve Fisher is retiring. Fisher has been at San Diego State since leaving Michigan in 1997.

The former U-M boss won the national championship with the Wolverines in 1989, taking over as an interim head coach after then athletic director Bo Schembechler appointed him to replace Bill Frieder. Frieder had accepted another job following the regular season, before the tournament began.

Fisher and the Glen Rice-led Wolverines went on a magical run through the NCAA Tournament, defeating Seton Hall in the title game. Fisher went on to be named head coach, recruiting the "Fab Five," which made the NCAA title game in both 1992 and 1993.

Fisher moved on to SDSU after issues with the NCAA arose, ones that ultimately led to strong self-sanctioning by Michigan, and coached there through this year.
