Michigan Football: Frosh DL Out For The Year, Newsome Progressing

Several Michigan freshmen have already made an impact on this year’s team, but the Wolverines will be missing one of them for the year.

Defensive lineman Donovan Jeter was in line for playing time this season, having enrolled in the spring to get a jump on things. He's had surgery, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday, and will not return.

“He’s going to be out for the year,” he said.

Freshman end Luiji Vilain, too, has been banged up.

“Hopefully [he’ll be back] at some point soon, and it’s not a long term [deal],” Harbaugh said.

Vilain had also enrolled early and was slated to see some playing time.

Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Grant Newsome continues to make remarkable progress. He's back running and continues to get better following last year’s knee injury that nearly cost him his leg.

“He’s grinding, working out every day,” Harbaugh said. “He’s also coaching, a student-coach right now, which is very valuable right now. He’s a ‘go blue’ guy all the way, progressing nicely.

"Hopefully, best-case scenario, he could be back for the Bowl game, December … that time frame. He may not, either. That would be accelerated. You hope for the best, and plan for longer, but he’s progressing nicely … a great attitude.”

Redshirt freshman running back Kareem Walker and freshman receiver Oliver Martin didn’t dress Saturday against Cincinnati. Both are ‘working through something,’ Harbaugh said.

“Kareem has a little knee [injury], Oliver another extremity,” he said.
