Michigan Football Notebook: Harbaugh Still Mum On Starting Quarterback

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh knows Florida will be starting Felipe Franks at quarterback, but he’s not ready to name his starter.

Harbaugh joined 97.1 WXYT’s Mike Stone this morning to talk about his team, but that was one subject he wouldn’t touch.

“Not revealing that to you this morning,” he said.

He did say he was pleased with the group as a whole, especially the lack of mistakes.

“They’ve all been great. The best thing about all three, they’re completing passes consistently, accurate and they haven’t been turning the ball over,” he said. “They’ve been really good that way, and making plays … and very, very minimal with mistakes. Mental mistakes, you can’t find a mistake. Wilton, John, and Brandon have been really good that way. In all areas, they’ve been really good.”

The quarterbacks do know who is starting, however. It’s very likely redshirt junior Wilton Speight over fifth-year senior John O’Korn and redshirt freshman Brandon Peters.

Harbaugh said he hasn’t paid attention to the fact that most pick the Wolverines third in the Big Ten East, and he’s not looking back at the last two years and the absence of a title.

“I’ve personally never paid a lot of attention to predictions,” he said. “We’re getting ready for our first game. Been through camp, now we’re getting ready to play Florida. That’s where our focus is.

“We would have liked to be in first place each year, would have liked to win those first two games against Ohio State. Now we attack year three with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”

Harbaugh wouldn’t give names, but he did say there were several guys who would surprise this year.

“Quite a few, actually. Without leaving anybody out, I’ll just say that, but there are six, seven or eight players who may surprise you,” he said.

“We’re going into the season with excitement. I can’t wait to watch our guys compete. They’ve worked extremely hard during camp and been great that way. Now I just want to watch them go out and play a game.”

NOTES

Harbaugh said he was aware of Florida’s suspensions, which include its best receiver and top running back.

“You’re aware of who’s not going to be playing, then look to see who the next player up is,” he said. “Plug that in so you know what you’re looking at individually, position number, etc. That’s about the way it’s been.”

He’s not fond of the neutral site, but said his team would be ready to go.

“It is where it is. Neutral site game … I’d be lying if I tell you I preferred it,” he said. “No, I don’t. I prefer playing in college stadiums, Ann Arbor or at one of our opponents.”
