Former Michigan head coach Bump Elliott tragically saw his son, Bob, pass away this past weekend at the age of 64, due to complications from a long battle with cancer.

Bob Elliott was hired by Nebraska this past February to serve as the team’s safeties coach, but was moved to a defensive analyst role in June due to his declining health.

Prior to Nebraska, Elliott spent several years at Notre Dame. He arrived in South Bend in 2012 and coached the Irish’s safeties that year, helping lead the team to an appearance in the national title game. He coached outside linebackers in 2014, before being given the title “special assistant to the head coach” in 2015 and 2016.

Elliott made several other stops throughout his 41-year coaching career, including Iowa State, San Diego State, Kansas State, Iowa, North Carolina, Ball State and Kent State.

A native of Iowa City, Elliott played defensive back for the Hawkeyes from 1972-1975 and immediately began his coaching career the following year, becoming a grad assistant for Iowa in 1976.

In fact, his whole career in Iowa City occurred while his father, Bump, served as the school’s athletic director from 1970-1991.

Prior to working as Iowa’s AD, Bump Elliott was Michigan’s associate AD from 1969-1970, and its head coach from 1959-1968. Posting an overall record of 51-42-2 at Michigan, he gave way to legendary coach Bo Schembechler after the 1968 season.

He is currently 92 years old.
