Milwaukee Bucks rookie and big man D.J. Wilson has impressed in Summer League play. Wilson has notched games of 17 and 16 points recently, living up to his No. 17 overall Draft status.
"Wilson, the 17th overall pick in June's draft, opened the game with his best half in three summer league games," the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported. "He racked up 10 points in the first six minutes, canning a pair of three-pointers from the top of the key in the process.
BOX SCORE: Clippers 100, Bucks 93
"By the end of the first half, he had 15 points, including making 3 of 4 three-point attempts. One night removed from a 16-point, 6-rebound performance against the Brooklyn Nets in which he made 2 of 5 three-point attempts, Wilson got going early and kept the momentum going."
“I was just taking what they were giving me," Wilson said. "They were sagging off and whatnot, so I was just trying to make the most of that opportunity.
“They started falling for me last game, so I think I was able to stay on that little hot streak or whatever, especially in the first half. Last game kind of just rolled over into this first half.”
Former U-M guard Caris LeVert scored 18 points (0-for-7 from long range), grabbed seven rebounds and added three assists in 28 minutes of a loss to the Bucks. He also scored on Wilson off the bounce.
LeVert shined in a blowout win of New Orleans July 10. He entered as the team's leading scorer and notched 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, starting 2-for-3 from downtown before missing his final three.
LeVert has struggled with his jumper in Summer League, NetsDaily.com reported, having gone 0-of-10 from three prior to Monday’s win, but LeVert has found his way within the perimeter, making 16-of-23 from two-point range in Vegas.
LeVert has made nine of 15 free throws, and has averaged seven rebounds per game (he notched eight against New Orleans).
Derrick Walton made an early impression with his Orlando team in averaging 10.0 points per game and 3.5 assists per game in four Summer League games. He was a floor leader.
“We had a stretch there in the second half where they cut into our lead and it was starting to get a little bit tight,” coach Chad Forcier told Orlando Magic Daily after the Magic’s Summer League win over the Miami Heat. “[Walton] … ended up controlling the tempo and giving our team a sense of calm and hit a couple timely shots.”
He has a legitimate chance to make the roster.
Zak Irvin started three of the four games in which he appeared, averaging 4.8 points per game but shooting 1-for-13 from three-point range.
